Xi Jinping was today formally named as the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party ? the new leader of the world?s rising superpower and the most powerful man in a nation of 1.3 billion.
In a move that broke significantly with recent tradition, Mr Xi was simultaneously appointed chairman of the party?s Central Military Commission, giving him immediate power over the largest army in the world with the fastest expanding military budget.
