FITNES FOR KIDS: It really does start early | Pahrump Valley Times

By Charlene Dean

Do the kids spend too much time in front of the TV or playing video games? Do they survive on junk and processed foods? Personal trainer George Arceo? said it?s not healthy and to offer parents a way to combat couch potatoes, he will offer a kid?s boot camp beginning July 31.
Arceo has been working out for 20 years and been a personal trainer for 10. He?s taught classes at First Move Fitness and was the trainer for Express Fitness, now Custom Health & Fitness, before branching out in April.
Arceo said, ?There is an obesity epidemic in this country. My hope in starting these boot camps is to get them moving and teach them how to eat properly.?
He plans on holding the exercise programs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday in Ian Deutch Park.
The first hour will be an exercise workout but he said, ?I realize the regimen will have to be adjusted individually so the younger kids? or children who are overweight can keep up and get something from it.?
Arceo said thus far, his youngest student is 5 years old. He will register through teenagers for the camps. He has six students registered. ?The exercises aren?t strenuous enough to prevent younger children from being able to work out,? he said.
The second hour will be filled with various games. Arceo said, ?It could be a balloon toss or an obstacle course, fun, but active.?
One of his concerns is nutrition. He said parents need to learn about eating right, too. ?If kids have good eating habits when they?re young, it will stay with them through adulthood and they will be healthier for it.?
This program started because Arceo said he was being contacted by parents wanting to continue their children in healthy activity after another trainer here moved away.
?Kids need something to do. There?s nothing for them to do here and this program will help keep them active.?
The boot camp isn?t free. The cost is $40 per child per month with the price reduced to $100 per month for three children. Registration includes signing a liability waiver.
Arceo also offers private personal training. He calls them ?house calls,? and will bring portable exercise equipment to an individual?s home for the workout.
The cost for private services is $400 per month or 12 sessions, ?whichever comes first.?
?I know some people don?t or can?t work out three days a week. I?ll work with them at their comfort level.?
