Abu Sayyaf link to al-Qaeda wounded, hunted by troops

ZAMBOANGA City police and military forces are pursuing a key leader and financier of Abu Sayyaf bandits who was wounded when the troops stormed and overrun a bandit training camp in a remote barangay in this city.

The objective of the pursuit operation is Khair Mundos, who is wanted both by the Philippine and United States governments for his role in the transfer of funds from the al-Qaeda terrorist network to the Abu Sayyaf Group.

The United States Department of Justice is offering $500,000 for information leading to the arrest of Mundos.

Mundos was wounded but managed to escape when the troops overrun the bandits? training camp on Thursday in Dulian, Calabasa, 55 kilometers east of this city?s downtown.

?A pursuit operation against him [Mundos] is now ongoing,? Chief Supt. Napoleon Estilles, Western Mindanao police commander, disclosed.

Four Abu Sayyaf bandits and a bandit?s wife was killed while four others were wounded, including Mundos, when the troops stormed the training camp.

A follower of Mundos?s group identified as Sambri Aslon Kamlon alias Abu Zaid.

A policeman was injured during the firefight.

The raid on the Abu Sayyaf training camp resulted in the safe rescue of Yuan-Kai Lin, 38, a Chinese, who was kidnapped along with another Chinese on June 4 from their rented house in F.L. Pe?a, Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay.

His companion, Jian Luo, 48, was released on August 26 at the parking area of one of the hotels in this city after alleged payment of a P5-million ransom.

Lin and Luo are natives of Shenshen, China, and are the vice president for operations and vice president for finance of Li-Lo Minerals Traders, respectively.

Estilles revealed that the bandits? training camp that was overran was used by Mundos?s group ?in keeping kidnap victims.?

The troops recovered four high-powered firearms, several rounds of ammunition, 14 backpacks owned by new Abu Sayyaf recruits, training manuals of the Southeast Asian terror group Jema?ah Islamiyah, cellular telephones and other personal belongings, including hammocks.

Estilles said there were more than 10 huts inside the training camp.

Photographs taken by the raiding team showed that there are running trenches from one hut to the other.

?It is believed to be the training camp of the Abu Sayyaf bandits in the region,? he said.

Estilles said the training camp also served as a safe haven for Abu Sayyaf bandits from the province of Basilan and Sulu.

He said several teenagers, believed to be new recruits, are frequently sighted in the camp as an intelligence report said, ?it is in that place they [bandits] indoctrinate them [recruits].?

The funds channeled from the al-Qaeda terrorist network to the Abu Sayyaf through Mundos were used to carry out atrocities to include bombings here in Mindanao and other parts of the country, Estilles said.

Mundos was captured in 2004 but bolted from the Kidapawan City Jail in 2007.

Mundos, while in government custody, confessed to have arranged funds for terrorist bombings throughout Mindanao.
