SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Jerry Brown may be a "retread," but he's confident he can run circles around New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
Brown earlier this week dismissed barbs Christie made about Brown to California Republican delegates this week, but now he's challenging the morbidly obese governor to a series of athletic contests.
"There's nothing wrong with being a little retread," Brown told union members in a Los Angeles speech Thursday. "Not as much hair, I've slowed down a little bit, but I have to tell you, I ran three miles in 29 minutes two nights ago.
"And I hereby challenge Gov. Christie to a three-mile run, a push-up contest and a chin-up contest. And whatever he wants to bet, I have no doubt of the outcome."
Christie told the state's GOP delegates this week that he couldn't believe California voters elected the then-72-year old former two-time governor over Republican Meg Whitman, the former eBay CEO who now runs Hewlett-Packard.
"California made a bad choice by going with an old retread," Christie said. "I've gotta tell you, Jerry Brown? Jerry Brown? I mean, he won the New Jersey presidential primary over Jimmy Carter when I was 14 years old."
That got Brown's gander up.
"Why should I be governor? Why not? I may know a helluva lot more than you," Brown said. "Because when you were 14, I was passing the farm labor bill. I was passing worker protection in California."
Cracked Brown: "That's the first time
I've ever been attacked at a convention, so I feel that I'm finally coming into my own."

Former British prime minister Tony Blair declared that new President Joyce Banda has brought "hope and expectation" to Malawi, during his visit to the impoverished southern African nation.
"These are challenging times, difficult times (but) there is an enormous amount of hope and expectation," Blair said late Thursday in Malawi.
"This has come about because of the leadership she (Banda) has shown."
Half of Malawi's 14 million people live on less than a dollar a day.
Banda was sworn in as president in April following the death of late president Bingu wa Mutharika, inheriting a battered economy marked by shortages of fuel and foreign exchange.
She swiftly set about restoring relations with foreign donors, who had suspended funds due to concerns about hardline governance and rights issues under Mutharika.
Her administration has launched a "recovery plan" through private sector-led economic growth.
Blair, who heads the non-profit African Governance Initiative, is in Malawi for two days and on Friday will attend an investment roundtable discussion with Malawi's business captains.
Anniversaries have come and gone in the past, but this years events puts an interesting challenge before the community of New Orleans transplants in Houston. Family relationships, friends, and networks still provide a tug for these residents that sometimes call themselves sometimes ?Newstonians,? or ?Houstorlinians.?

Bankruptcy can be stressful and it can also bring relief. On one hand, having people go through all of your personal financial information can be formidable. On the other, however, after the bankruptcy has been discharged, you can get a fresh start and begin to re-build your credit. Continue reading to learn what you need to know to make your bankruptcy almost painless.
TIP! Always be honest with the information you give about your finances. Not only is hiding income and assets wrong, it is also a crime.
When consulting with your bankruptcy lawyer, be sure to disclose all of your significant debts. This obviously includes information on your credit card debts, medical bills, and other outstanding debts, but you should keep in mind that it also includes any loans that you have taken from relatives or friends.
If you need to file for bankruptcy, consider retaining a bankruptcy lawyer. Here are some of the things a qualified bankruptcy attorney can do for you: give you solid advice, simplify the complexity of the process, represent you in the courtroom. Attorneys can prepare your documents and help you with any concerns you may have.
Chapter 7
If you have a co-debtor, consider the ramifications that filing a Chapter 7 bankruptcy will have. When you file under Chapter 7, you will no longer be legally responsible for any debts that were signed by yourself and a co-debtor. This does not dissolve any co-signers of the debt, and your creditors will continue to try and collect from them.
TIP! Once a person?s debts outstrip his or her ability to repay them, bankruptcy may be the only option left. If this sounds familiar, you should read up on the bankruptcy laws in your state.
Do not even think about paying your taxes with credit and petitioning for bankruptcy right after. In most states, this is not dischargeable debt. Therefore, you will end up owing the IRS a lot of money. Transferring the debt to another medium (e.g. a credit card) won?t magically make a tax debt discharagable, either. So it does not help you to put the tax bill on your charge card if you know the debt will be discharged anyway.
Bankruptcy is both a good and a bad thing; it depends on perspective. Regardless of your reason for filing, be aware information is the closest friend you have during the entire thing. The advice you have been provided with has probably helped you better understand bankruptcy. Make good use of these tips. You will be glad you did

Bernanke is due to address central bankers at an annual meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday, with investors hoping he will outline plans for further measures to boost the world's number one economy.
"Players remain in wait-and-see mode leading up to the Jackson Hole summit where more hints on information about the direction of monetary policy are expected," said Hiroichi Nishi, general manager of equities at SMBC Nikko Securities, according to Dow Jones Newswires.
Global markets enjoyed an impressive rally in August on hopes for fresh Fed stimulus and bond-buying by the ECB, while Chinese leaders are also expected to loosen monetary policy to kickstart the Asian giant.
On forex markets the euro bought $1.2541 and 98.52 yen in afternoon Asian trade, compared with $1.2565 and 98.68 yen in New York late Tuesday.

Study suggests large methane reservoirs beneath Antarctic ice sheetPublic release date: 29-Aug-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Tim Stephens stephens@ucsc.edu 831-459-2495 University of California - Santa Cruz
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The Antarctic Ice Sheet could be an overlooked but important source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, according to a report in the August 30 issue of Nature by an international team of scientists.
The new study demonstrates that old organic matter in sedimentary basins located beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet may have been converted to methane by micro-organisms living under oxygen-deprived conditions. The methane could be released to the atmosphere if the ice sheet shrinks and exposes these old sedimentary basins.
Coauthor Slawek Tulaczyk, a professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UC Santa Cruz, said the project got its start five years ago in discussions with first author Jemma Wadham at the University of Bristol School of Geographical Sciences, where Tulaczyk was on sabbatical.
"It is easy to forget that before 35 million years ago, when the current period of Antarctic glaciations started, this continent was teeming with life," Tulaczyk said. "Some of the organic material produced by this life became trapped in sediments, which then were cut off from the rest of the world when the ice sheet grew. Our modeling shows that over millions of years, microbes may have turned this old organic carbon into methane."
The science team estimated that 50 percent of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (1 million square kilometers) and 25 percent of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (2.5 million square kilometers) overlies pre-glacial sedimentary basins containing about 21,000 billion metric tons of organic carbon.
"This is an immense amount of organic carbon, more than ten times the size of carbon stocks in northern permafrost regions," Wadham said. "Our laboratory experiments tell us that these sub-ice environments are also biologically active, meaning that this organic carbon is probably being metabolized to carbon dioxide and methane gas by microbes."
The researchers numerically simulated the accumulation of methane in Antarctic sedimentary basins using an established one-dimensional hydrate model. They found that sub-ice conditions favor the accumulation of methane hydrate (that is, methane trapped within a structure of water molecules, forming a solid similar to regular ice).
They also calculated that the potential amount of methane hydrate and free methane gas beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet could be up to 4 billion metric tons, a similar order of magnitude to some estimates made for Arctic permafrost. The predicted shallow depth of these potential reserves also makes them more susceptible to climate forcing than other methane hydrate reserves on Earth.
Coauthor Sandra Arndt, a NERC fellow at the University of Bristol, who conducted the numerical modeling, said, "It's not surprising that you might expect to find significant amounts of methane hydrate trapped beneath the ice sheet. Just like in sub-seafloor sediments, it is cold and pressures are high, which are important conditions for methane hydrate formation."
If substantial methane hydrate and gas are present beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet, methane release during episodes of ice-sheet collapse could act as a positive feedback on global climate change during past and future ice-sheet retreat.
"Our study highlights the need for continued scientific exploration of remote sub-ice environments in Antarctica, because they may have far greater impact on Earth's climate system than we have appreciated in the past," Tulaczyk said.

The Lexmark C746dn , a color laser printer geared to mid-sized workgroups, is a close relative of the Lexmark C748de that I recently reviewed. The C746dn lacks the latter's massive touch screen and can't handle quite as large print volumes, but it costs less and printed better graphics in our testing. If your business is looking for a workhorse printer that can output high-quality graphics, the C746dn should be on your short list.
The gray-and-white C746dn measures 17.9 by 17.1 by 15.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 56 pounds?this tall and hulking printer is best moved into place by two people. Set in the middle of the front panel is a 2.4-inch non-touch color LCD, which is controlled by a 4-way rocker with central button. Other buttons include Back, Home, Sleep, and Cancel. To the right of the screen is an alphanumeric keypad. A front USB port lets you print from a thumb drive, though you can't preview the documents.
The C746dn has a standard paper capacity of 650 sheets, split between a 550-sheet tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. You can add an optional 2,000-sheet tray ($599 direct) plus up to 3 additional 550-sheet trays ($299 each) to bring the maximum paper capacity to 4,300 sheets. Another option is a 160-GB hard drive ($479 direct). Its maximum monthly duty cycle of 85,000 pages is slightly less than the C748de's 100,000 pages. This printer comes standard with an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. The Lexmark C746n ($699 direct) is the same as the C746dn but lacks the auto-duplexer, while the Lexmark C746dtn ($1,199 direct) adds another 550-sheet paper tray for the same price as you'd pay if you bought the C746dn plus the tray separately.
The C746dn connects via USB or Ethernet (optional Wi-Fi is available); I tested it over an Ethernet connection with its driver installed on a computer running Windows Vista.
Printing Speed The C746dn, rated at up to 35 pages per minute for both color and monochrome printing, printed out our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software), at an effective 7.5 pages per minute (ppm). That?s in line with its rated speed, and should be about the speed you?d get if you were to print text only. The Lexmark C748de, also rated at 35 pages per minute, was timed at 7.1 ppm, as was the OKI C711dn , rated at up to 34 pages per minute for monochrome printing, 32 for color. The three printers are essentially tied, as we don't consider differences of less than 1 ppm as significant at these speeds. We clocked the Editors? Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN at 4.5 ppm when we tested it in 2009.
Output Quality Overall output quality based on our tests was par for a color laser, with below-par text, above-par graphics, and par photo quality.? Text quality was suitable for general business use, but not for documents like resumes in which you seek to convey a good visual impression, nor for desktop publishing or marketing materials.
Graphics quality was very good, with bright colors and only minor flaws, namely dithering (graininess) and trouble printing some thin, colored lines. They're good enough for PowerPoint handouts or graphics in formal reports, including ones going to people you're seeking to impress, or for graphics-heavy marketing materials. Photos were of a quality suitable for use in client newsletters.
Lexmark's claimed cost per printed page for the C746dn is 1.8 cents per monochrome and 12.8 cents per color page. The Lexmark C748de has the same claimed 1.8-cent monochrome running cost but a lower color cost at 9.8 cents per page. The LED-based OKI C711dn?s running costs were lower still, at 1.1 cents per monochrome page and 7.9 cents per color page. The Xerox Phaser 6280dn's costs were somewhat higher, at 2.7 cents per monochrome page and 13.8 cents per color page.
Businesses looking for a workhorse printer for mid-sized workgroups to output color graphics should take special note of the Lexmark C746dn. It costs less than the Lexmark C748de yet has comparable speed and showed better graphics quality in our testing. The C746dn falls short on text quality, though. Although slower than the two Lexmarks, the Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN excels in output quality, with text quality fully the equal of its exemplary graphics. Xerox has discontinued the 6280DN, but it's available from a number of etailers at steep discounts. If print speed is more important than text quality, though, the C746dn can also print out magnificent graphics, and at a much faster clip.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) ? An awakening giant industry is making a strong first showing at the Minnesota State Fair.
The Land of 10,000 Beers, an exhibit put on by the Minnesota Craft Brewer?s Guild, is washing away even the guild?s aggressive expectations after the fair?s opening weekend.
?We didn?t really know what to expect,? said Dan Justesen, the guild?s vice president. ?We had our game plan, and this has just blown the roof right off the top.?
Justesen described Minnesota?s craft beer scene as a giant waking up after decades of hibernation.
?People ? for hundreds, thousands of years ? enjoyed good beer. And for about 25-30 years, they?ve been exposed to bad beer,? he said. ?And all of a sudden, a whole new generation (and past generations) are being exposed to good beer again.?
At the exhibit, which is located in the Agriculture/Horticulture Building, fair-goers can buy flights of Minnesota-made beers from more than 20 breweries, arranged by taste. The flights come with four different 5-ounce beers, grouped as either dark, light, Belgian-style or hoppy. The exhibit also displays old-school Minnesota beer memorabilia, posters that explain the brewing process and barrels containing beer ingredients, such as hops and barley.

?It?s going back to what all of us really liked hundreds of years ago,? Justesen said. ?Are you man enough [to drink] what your grandpa drank??
Minnesota had a number of beers before Prohibition put them out of business, Justesen said. After Prohibition, Minnesota breweries popped up again, but they fizzled out as three mega-breweries dominated the market.
?But underneath that, craft brewing [was] created and has been percolating up,? Justesen said. ?And now we are about six percent of the market.?
Six percent might not seem like much, but Minnesota consumers seem to, at least, be familiar with craft beer. (It was hard to find a beer drinker who had no idea about the craft brew scene).
Joann Barbour, of Roseville, visited the exhibit Monday, and was no stranger to the beers on display. She said one of her favorites was Surly Furious, and was quick to offer her thoughts on what would make the display better.
?They kind of just say what the flights are and pour them,? she said. ?But it doesn?t say what each sample is (on the cup).?
But information overload is what the guild is trying to avoid. It wanted to emphasize the flavors craft beers offer and that beer is (in a social sense) a family thing and part of Minnesota?s agricultural process.
?Beer is culture,? Justesen said. ?What we want to do is say: Beer is for adults, but it?s nothing evil. It?s fun.?
For kids and those not interested in drinking alcohol, the exhibit offers Minnesota-made craft root beer.

The Land of 10,000 Beers is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and offers brochures that detail breweries and brewpubs around the state. The beers at the exhibit change from day to day and there are daily presentations on topics ranging from Minnesota beer tourism to home brewing.
?It?s about enjoying a quality of life, having good food, good flavors, good feelings,? Justesen said.

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) ? Breast cancer patients who are obese or even just overweight may have a higher risk of recurrence of the most common type of the disease.
Researchers at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care studied close to 5,000 women. Patients? who were obese had about a 30% higher risk of having a recurrence of their breast cancer and 50% higher risk of dying from their breast cancer.
Researchers suspect hormones, higher insulin levels and inflammation, which are associated with extra body fat, could play a role in driving cancer growth.
Experts say the findings suggest extra body fat causes hormonal changes and inflammation, which could drive some cancers, but more study is needed to confirm the link.
Writing this blog has given my husband and I some great opportunities.? We have gotten vacuum cleaners, strollers, cleaning products and snacks.? We have even been given brand new cars to take on vacations.? But what I have been trying to get for a while now finally arrived:? a nice family trip.? The people from Adler Planetarium invited my whole family up to Chicago for a weekend to learn about the universe the cosmos and everything under the sun.? Well? actually everything above the sun too.? And around the sun.? And?. Well, you get the idea!
Adler Planetarium
The Adler Planetarium is America?s first ever Planetarium, opening in the 1930?s.? It continues to lead the way today with the creation of their newest show, ?Welcome to the Universe? shown in the Grainger Sky Theater, the most technologically-advanced theater in the world.? This shows start with a view of the night sky and brings you way out into space, only to look back on where you came from; Earth.? Looking back at Earth gives you the unique experience to see our home planet from that perspective.? Then the trip will have you zipping around the moon and flying through canyons on Mars.? You will get tour of the Milky Way and beyond, learning about how large the Universe really is.
Welcome to the Universe is the newest adventure showing in the Grainger Sky Theater
We drove into Chicago early on Saturday afternoon and checked into the Swissotel right down the street from the Navy Pier.? The location was unbelievable the view was breathtaking.? We even saw the presidential helicopter flying by.? We had heard he was in town as well, although probably for a different reason than we were!
This was our view from our hotel room in Chicago!
By the time we got checked into the hotel, we didn?t have enough time to make it to the Adler Planetarium that afternoon.? So we walked around Chicago and ate at Lou Malnati?s Pizzeria.? As a family used to the suburbs, it was really neat to tote around a major city.? It didn?t take long at all until we were used to the tall buildings, the crowds and all of the noise.
Our Little Spaceman
We got a good night?s sleep in a beautiful hotel room and woke up early the next morning to head to the Adler Planetarium.? The Adler Planetarium is conveniently located right on the shores of Lake Michigan on the beautiful museum campus.? The planetarium itself was very easy to find and parking was a very convenient, short walk away.? You can also take the water taxi (Shoreline Sightseeing) from Navy Pier to the Field Museum which is a short walk away.
Heading into the Planetarium.
The staff was extremely helpful, kind and courteous from the first moment we were there.?? At the ticket counter as soon as we walked in, they explained everything we would need to know to get to most out of our visit.? We didn?t have too much time and Jonah had made it clear that he wanted to see the show, ?One World, One Sky:? Big Bird?s Adventure?.? We were given great directions from the staff on how to get to the theater and, once there, were again impressed by everyone working there.? The staff at the theater made every effort to help my family out to make us comfortable.? Caroline, my 3-month-old that never, ever cries?. Well?? she started screaming her head off right as the show was about to start.? The staff was so helpful getting me out of the theater so that I wouldn?t bother anyone else.? My husband and Jonah stayed in to watch the show.? My husband said he spent half the time watching the show and the other half watching Jonah, who was completely delighted by the whole experience.? My son?s head was constantly whipping around to catch everything happening on the huge screen surrounding him.? The show is about Big Bird and Elmo meeting a friend from China named Hu Hu Zhu.? Together, they learn about the Big Dipper, the North Star, the sun and the moon.? They also learn that we all share the same sky and that, despite the fact we are from different places, we are all joined by the cosmos.? Jonah absolutely loved it.? It was fun, informative and just the right length to hold his attention.
Here is Jonah and I waiting for the show to start!
Here is Caroline before she pitched her fit and I had to take her out of the room! She looks so innocent doesn?t she?
After the show, we had a little bit of time to tour the rest of the planetarium.? Everything was very kid friendly and there was plenty to see and do between screening times if you have gone there mostly just to see the shows.? Jonah especially liked the spaceship you can climb up into and simulate a launch, or a ?blast off? as Jonah calls it.
Jonah and Daddy walking along the spacewalk to the ?shuttle?
This is the inside of the shuttle that the kids can play in and pretend to navigate the cosmos.
They have an amazing store inside the Adler Planetarium. You can get the space helmet that Jonah was wearing in the picture above as well as many more gifts. Jonah really wanted a ?robot claw? arm thingy and he has been playing with it ever since. Even I have to admit that it is a lot of fun!
We have so many amazing photos from our trip that we couldn?t possibly show them all here in this post.? You can see more pictures in our Facebook Album HERE.
We were so thankful for our chance to experience this weekend.? Thanks so much to Adler Planetarium.? It is wonderful that locations like this exist.? They are there to educate and entertain everyone from children to senior citizens.? If you are in Chicago or planing a visit soon, I definitely recommend you spending some time there.? You won?t regret it.
Be sure to check back next week to hear more about our fantastic trip to Chicago and our stay at the Swissotel as well as our water taxi adventure and dinner at Malnati?s Pizzeria!
A huge thank you to Alder Planetarium and partners for putting us up in a hotel room as well as admission into the planetarium.? All opinions are mine!
ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Mechanisms that protect plants from freezing are placed in storage during the summer and wisely unpacked when days get shorter.
In the current issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Michael Thomashow, University Distinguished Professor of molecular genetics, demonstrates how the CBF (C-repeat binding factor) cold response pathway is inactive during warmer months when days are long, and how it?s triggered by waning sunlight to prepare plants for freezing temperatures.
The CBF cold response pathway was discovered by Thomashow?s team, and it has been shown to be active in crop species as they ready themselves for cold weather.
?We knew that when plants are exposed to cold, nonfreezing temperatures, they can better survive below-freezing temperatures,? said Thomashow, who co-authored the study with Chin-Mei Lee, MSU plant biologist. ?What this new research demonstrates, though, is that plants? defense mechanisms are also triggered by shortening daylight.?
It?s widely known that waning daylight triggers trees? defenses against freezing, but this has never been demonstrated in crops and other annual plants. The paper not only shows that such plants use shorter days as a cue for the impending winter, but that the mechanism also is turned off during the warm growing season.
?The CBF pathway is actively turned off during the summer to prevent the allocation of precious resources toward unneeded frost protection,? Thomashow said.
Identifying the genes involved in this process gives researchers the potential tools to fine tune this regulation and increase crop productivity, he added.
Thomashow?s research is supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy (Division of Chemical Sciences, Geosciences, and Biosciences, Office of Basic Energy Sciences), the National Science Foundation (Plant Genome Project) and MSU AgBioResearch.
