Coming Up Short | Barb Langlois

?

I received a newsletter today, a very well written and engaging newsletter, I might add.? It was from Lewis Howes.? Who?s he?? Oh, he?s the founder of the Sports Executive Association but more importantly, he?s a LinkedIn expert (social media for those of you unfamiliar with LinkedIn) and . . . he made $7 million for his business using LinkedIn, over 3 years!

Show off!

His article also appeared in Forbes magazine, which had 50000 views and was second for the most read articles in Forbes.

What?s he trying to do . . . impress me?

It?s . . . working.

Do you ever read something and then start to feel like a flop because you haven?t achieved the same level of success (let me personalize this one: haven?t achieved even a fraction of the same level of success) as the person you?re reading about?? Naa, me either (don?t even know where that question came from).

Yesterday, I read an article in a professional speaking journal about a speaker, Mikki Williams.? The tag line for the article was ?Big personality, Big hair and Big jewelry lead to speaking success.? She?s been compared to Dolly Parton on steroids. The article says Mikki Williams has had 9 successful careers (self built)? and counting ? in the business world.

Show off!

How does anyone create 9 successful businesses?

And just as a throw in, she?s a single parent, her husband died in a car accident.

Now, I feel like a complete goober.

The book I?m currently reading ?The Woman Who Changed Her Brain? is about a women who well . . . changed her brain! She was diagnosed with severe learning disabilities as a young child (she couldn?t relate symbols together so couldn?t follow a discussion, a tv show, couldn?t do math ? you get the picture).? At the age of 29, she discovered brain exercises that would stimulate the part of her brain that was impaired and generated new neural pathways.

Show off!

Just so you know, she?s not a researcher or doctor, just someone trying to improve her life and she?s has had unprecedented success. ?Thirty years ago, she started her own school in Toronto, to assist learning disabled children.? She has radically changed people?s lives.

How can anyone be that smart and determined?

I can hardly figure out what the title of my article should be.

Seriously though, I love to read about other people?s success but the rotten part about that ? it?s hard for me to remain neutral, especially if I?m having a ?low? day.

Do you have a similar problem? ?You might not be reading about the same people I read about, but do you ever find yourself measuring your life against someone else?s?

And coming up short?

Here?s what happens to me:

I almost always begin with: ?What?s wrong with me? How come it seems so easy for them but I?m flipping out at the thought of speaking to a journalist??? (Cool how I slipped that in, huh? More on that later.)

And then last night as I was reading my book (The Woman Who Changed Her Brain) I thought, ?Maybe I have a brain lesion that?s preventing me from moving forward??

Then again, maybe I?m spending more time looking for reasons rather than results.

Lewis? article (the one I read today) gave me some suggestions on what I can do. I figured he must know something if 50000 people are reading his words.? Here?s what he says:

There are two things in life we can control.

1. ?Our Attitude

2. ?Our Actions/ Reactions

No matter how bad things seem to be looking,? how much you are struggling with growing your?business,? if your relationships are stressing you out, or you ?aren?t living your passion?(and you?re reading about everyone else?s success ? just a little editting in italics from me!), you have the ability ?to change the way you think, and act about every situation.

How are you thinking right now, (enviously) and what type of actions ?are your thoughts creating? (Actions? Well it?s more like inaction because I?m wondering what it would be like to have 7 million and be featured in Forbes.)

Are they the kind that are you getting you the results you want? Hmmm, not really . . .

If not, simply start with a positive attitude in EVERY situation. ?Here?s my positive attitude ? someone from Forbes will read one of my articles and ask me to write for Forbes ? does grandiose thinking count as a positive attitude?

That will help build more positive momentum in every action,? and those positive actions will get you where you want to be.? Forbes . . . I think I?m on my way.

Lewis is right and it?s good advice.

Me?

I say, first of all, catch yourself when you compare to others. It?s deadly and will suck the life right out of your eyeballs.

Then, view other?s success as something you can aim for.? On your ladder of success, perhaps they are a rung or two higher than you are (or maybe 10).? That?s ok, just focus on your next step.

Finally, surround yourself with people who celebrate your wins or achievements no matter how big or small they are.? Positive energy is a great incentive for achieving results.

Leadership That Matters

Barb

PS

Here?s the scoop on The National Post Interview.? The reporter and I talked for 45 minutes and can you believe it was fun?? Imagine that.? Then she asked me some questions I needed to think about.? I said I would have to get back to her and she was totally ok with that.? Imagine that.

I got back to her then . . . I didn?t hear from her.

Oh no, here we go again . . .

?What if she thinks I?m an idiot?? What if she found no value in what I said?? What if she doesn?t? use anything I said??

Yesterday, I mustered up the courage to send her an email asking if she got the additional information I sent her.? Here?s how she responded:

Thanks for following up. I?ve had to put that project on hold a bit while covering the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences for the Post (I was sent out on assignment). Plan to get back with it next week upon my return.?Will definitely let you know what?s happening with it when I know.

What if, all my ?What iffing? is just a waste of time and energy?

PSS

Fugitive Venezuela judge helps elite U.S. anti-drugs unit

CARACAS/MIAMI (Reuters) - A former Venezuelan Supreme Court judge who fled the country last month is cooperating with an elite special operations unit of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration that targets major international traffickers, according to sources familiar with the case.

Testimony by Eladio Aponte could pave the way for indictments of President Hugo Chavez's allies. That would embarrass the socialist leader and help Washington cast its ideological adversary as leading a pariah nation.

The United States has alleged for years that Chavez turns a blind eye to trafficking and that officials in his government are directly involved, accusations that Chavez rejects.

Aponte is one of six special witnesses cooperating with the DEA in its investigation of Venezuelan government ties to trafficking, said a former U.S. government official familiar with the situation.

The case is being handled by Group 959, a unit of DEA's Special Operations Division, according to sources with direct knowledge of the case including a former law enforcement source.

The DEA declined to comment.

Group 959, known as the Bilateral Investigations Unit, was set up to target traffickers overseas plotting to import cocaine to the United States, even if no shipments actually arrive.

It takes its name from an extra-territorial extension of drug laws, known as Section 959, allowing prosecution of acts committed outside the jurisdiction of the United States.

David Tinsley, a retired DEA veteran who now runs his own private intelligence agency, said Group 959 would only be involved in the Aponte case if the government felt he could deliver strong evidence.

"In the hands of 959, he would become a very effective tool," he said. "They must have wanted Aponte bad. (The division) doesn't go on fishing expeditions, they are very surgical. They know who they are going after and why."

Group 959 has handled key investigations from Colombia to Afghanistan and West Africa. They include the 2006 indictment of the entire top leadership and 43 commanders of Colombia's FARC guerrilla army on charges of running a $25 billion drug trafficking network responsible for 60 percent of the cocaine on U.S. streets, according to former DEA agents.

DRUG TRADE

If the U.S. government does charge senior Venezuelan officials, it would echo the 1988 indictment of Panamanian military leader Manuel Noriega and some of his allies on drug trafficking and money laundering charges. U.S. troops went on to force Noriega from power the following year and he was tried and jailed in the United States.

Chavez's government has angrily denied the allegations leveled against it by U.S. officials and now by Aponte.

The scandal is unlikely to affect Chavez's October re-election bid, which will largely hinge on his recovery from an undisclosed type of cancer.

But it has spurred renewed attention to the allegations that Chavez has allowed a surge in drug trafficking in Venezuela.

Aponte said in an interview with Miami-based online TV channel SOi TV in April that Chavez allies routinely manipulate the court system, and he accused top officials of involvement in the drug trade.

He said he was ordered to release a military officer believed to be part of Chavez's inner circle who had been arrested for allegedly helping smuggle two tons of cocaine.

Aponte's claims were quickly reiterated by another former judge, Luis Velasquez, who left Venezuela in 2006 amid a dispute with Chavez allies. He said Venezuela's judicial system and military have been penetrated by drug traffickers.

Aponte was removed from his post by Venezuela's National Assembly on charges of assisting accused Venezuelan drug kingpin Walid Makled, considered one of the Andean region's biggest traffickers. The judge fled to Costa Rica where he met with DEA agents before being flown to the United States on April 17 aboard a government chartered plane.

KINGPIN TRIAL

Makled is on trial for drug trafficking, money laundering and murder, charges he denies. The trial has produced a drip-drip of incriminating details.

Makled has said he paid millions of dollars to government officials and military officers who helped him obtain lucrative concessions, including one that gave him the right to operate Venezuela's main port, and that he had flown judges and government ministers on his personal jet.

"If I'm a drug trafficker, then all those people I worked with are drug traffickers," he said in a 2010 interview from a prison cell in Colombia, where he was captured and later extradited to Venezuela.

Despite denying involvement in drug trafficking, he claims to have extensive evidence of government links to the cocaine trade.

Makled also told reporters last month that he made monthly payments to Aponte because the two were business partners in an airline. Government sympathizers gleefully repeated the claims in apparent efforts to impugn Aponte's credibility but critics said it in fact highlighted the drug trade's close ties with the judiciary.

Aponte has not commented on Makled's claims.

Cocaine is smuggled into Venezuela from neighboring Colombia, the world's top producer, and on to Europe, the United States and Africa.

The United States has already accused a number of Venezuelan officials including Defense Minister Henry Rangel of helping Colombian guerrillas smuggle cocaine, freezing those officials' assets in the United States and prohibiting U.S. citizens from doing business with them.

"Members of the government and security forces were credibly reported to have engaged in or facilitated drug trafficking activities," the White House said last year in an annual assessment of global cooperation in the drug war.

Chavez's government rejects Aponte's statements as U.S.-fueled propaganda, saying he "sold his soul" to the DEA. It says his dismissal shows Venezuela's judicial system works and it has discussed seeking his extradition from the United States.

"They have created an entire campaign meant to associate our armed forces and our defense minister with drug trafficking," said ruling Socialist Party official Blanca Eekhout.

Chavez, who halted cooperation with the DEA in 2005 on charges that it violated Venezuela's sovereignty, has repeatedly scoffed at U.S. accusations his government is soft on drugs. He notes Venezuela has on numerous occasions turned traffickers over to U.S. authorities and makes frequent narcotics seizures.

CARTEL WAR

The U.S. State Department estimated in a report this year that between 161 and 212 metric tons of cocaine "likely departed from Venezuela to global destinations in 2011."

Venezuela's drug trade stretches to West Africa and Eastern Europe, the report said, with cocaine shipments from Venezuela reaching the likes of Guinea Bissau and Ukraine.

Velasquez, the judge who echoed Aponte's criticisms, said war had broken out between Venezuelan cartels, including one made up of senior military officers known as the "Cartel of the Suns." Its name comes from the insignias that decorate the epaulettes of Venezuelan generals.

"(Chavez) should know that among his favorite generals there are drug traffickers," said Velasquez in a television interview, also with SOi TV filmed in Costa Rica, where he now lives. "There is proof that high-ranking officials have been bribed ... and nobody does anything."

Velasquez said that conflict was responsible for the murders of General Jesus Aguilarte and General Wilmer Moreno, close confidants of the president who were gunned down in March and April in killings that resembled drug mafia murders.

The government has been largely silent about the two cases, which is surprising because both victims took part in the failed 1992 coup that thrust Chavez to fame. Officers who were involved in that putsch are among Chavez's closest allies and Venezuela's most powerful officials.

A spokesman for Venezuela's main investigative police unit said the group had not yet determined a motive for the murders.

A Guide to Purchasing and Using Travel Insurance | ApostolicCM ...

bIs Travel Insurance Genuinely Essential?/b

Travel is already expensive sufficient, isn?t it? The cost of air fare, cruises, hotels, ground transportation, food and actions and entertainment are currently large sufficient. I never know about you, but I operate challenging for my money, and when I travel, I want to maintain as considerably of my income in MY pocket as possible. Is travel insurance a necessity or a luxury? Why not reduce a few corners here and there. Why get something if it?s not really essential?

My private solution is, needless to say, that I?m not independently rich and can?t withstand the prospective monetary losses if I call for medical care whilst I?m traveling. Not becoming independently rich also implies that I am inside the market for sufficient but cheap travel insurance coverage. I suspect that you simply are inside the same place, which means you, also need low-cost travel insurance coverage. If you?re nevertheless not certain about that, take into account the following.

Did you know that if you get sick or are injured even though traveling abroad, your medical program may not cover each of the expenses you may incur? In the event the fees of remedy are increased than the maximums of one?s health-related plan, you will be responsible for the distinction, unless of course you might have already purchased travel insurance. In reality, you could not even be admitted into hospitals in some countries without proof that you just have health or medical insurance.

This really is genuine for everyone, regardless of age or length of time abroad. Suppose you fall ill just a few hours right after arriving at your location. Or suppose you produce a day-trip to an additional nation, and also you are injured within a traffic accident. Or suppose one of your kids is part of a group creating a class pay a visit to abroad, gets food poisoning and calls for hospitalization. In all situations, with out satisfactory travel wellbeing insurance, you will be accountable for the costs over and past the limitations of your existing health-related plan.

Consequently, before going abroad, you will need to generate certain that you just are adequately covered by travel medical insurance coverage that won?t break your price range. You need to check to view if suitable coverage is currently obtainable to you by way of your medical strategy, employee advantages, or maybe through a charge card. When the coverage is adequate for your requirements, you then can get pleasure from your trip without having incurring the extra expense of travel insurance. However, if you are not confident of your coverage, or if your coverage is inadequate or non-existent, then your subsequent step must be to investigation and buy the travel insurance coverage you need.

bHow Considerably Are you able to Expect To Shell out?/b

When I purchased my first plane ticket to China a few many years ago it cost around $2000 round-trip, and my travel insurance price me over $500 because I did not store about for low-cost travel insurance coverage on-line.

A number of many years later on, a little bit older and wiser, and my travel insurance for another trip to China cost me much less?about $300 for roughly exactly the same coverage. The distinction? Just before purchasing my travel insurance coverage for the 2nd trip, I shopped close to on the web and got the coverage I needed, at the proper value. If I?d have bought my travel insurance for this most current trip from my travel agent, it would?ve price me about $600 for the trip, and my plane tickets only expense $1,500! Not precisely the wise strategy to go.

So how much will it expense you? Not as significantly cash as it will price you in the event you get sick or injured abroad and you don?t have any travel insurance coverage! That is the apparent answer to the question.

Actually, how much travel insurance coverage expenses will rely in your age as well as the kind of coverage you decide on. Simple policies price as tiny as $5.50 USD per $1000 of coverage. Around the other hand, you are able to anticipate a full coverage policy to expense you from 7 to 10% from the expense of your trip, based on your age. The older you?re, the more you will shell out. Regardless of what the cost of the policy, nevertheless, it really is positive to be a lot significantly less than the cost of health-related evacuation!

The good news is that you?ll be able to very easily, conveniently and quickly research and locate outstanding but low cost online travel insurance coverage and lessen the expenses while producing an informed obtain. This can be significantly far better than taking what you will be supplied in the travel agency since you can choose from numerous travel insurance organizations and polices and preserve by yourself a whole lot of money within the process. b2. Be sure the policy you?re considering provides adequate medical/dental coverage, such as health-related evacuation coverage/b just in case you need medical care within a spot where the best remedy available is below the requirements you?re accustomed to as part of your country. This can happen if you fall ill inside an establishing nation or perhaps on a cruise ship.

b3. Verify your current insurance coverage policies for possible coverage./b There is no sense in having to pay much more for what you previously have within your homeowner or tenant policy, this sort of as theft and loss coverage.

Night Shift Might Boost Women's Breast Cancer Risk: Study

MONDAY, May 28 (HealthDay News) -- Women who work the night shift more than twice a week might be increasing their risk for breast cancer, Danish researchers find.

Moreover, the risk appears to be cumulative and highest among women who describe themselves as "morning" people rather than "evening" people, the researchers say.

"About 10 to 20 percent of women in modern societies have night shift work," said lead researcher Johnni Hansen. "It might therefore be one of the largest occupational problems related to cancer."

Right now, the reasons for these findings are uncertain.

"Night shift work involves exposure to light at night, which decreases the production of the night hormone melatonin that seems to protect against certain cancers," said Hansen, of the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology at the Danish Cancer Society, in Copenhagen.

In addition, light at night might introduce circadian disruption, where the master clock in the brain becomes desynchronized from local cellular clocks in different body organs, affecting the breast, he said.

"Repeated phase shifting may lead to defects in the regulation of the circadian cell cycle, thus favoring uncontrolled growth," Hansen said.

Also, sleep deprivation after night shift work leads to the suppression of the immune system, which might increase the growth of cancer cells, he added.

This is not the first time this association has been recognized. In 2007 the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, said that working the night shift is "probably carcinogenic to humans," according to background information in the study.

The new study was published in the May 28 online edition of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

To determine the effect of night shift work on the risk for breast cancer, Hansen's team collected data on more than 18,500 women who worked for the Danish Army between 1964 and 1999.

The researchers identified 210 women who had breast cancer and compared them to almost 900 similar women who did not have breast cancer.

All of the women were asked about their working patterns, lifestyles and other factors such as their use of contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, and their sunbathing habits.

In addition, women were asked to classify themselves as "morning" or "evening" people.

In all, 141 women with breast cancer responded to the study questionnaires. In addition, 551 women who did not have breast cancer responded.

Among these women, the risk for breast cancer was increased 40 percent if they worked at night, the researchers found.

But for women who worked nights at least three times a week, and for at least six years, the risk was doubled, the findings showed.

Women who worked the night shift but who described themselves as morning people were at even higher risk of breast cancer. They were almost four times more likely to develop breast cancer as those who didn't work nights, according to the researchers.

In comparison, women who considered themselves evening people were twice as likely to develop breast cancer, they added.

Morning-preferring women who did not work at night had a lower overall risk of breast cancer than evening types, Hansen's team found.

"Since night shift work is unavoidable in modern societies, this type of work should be limited in duration and limited to less than three night shifts per week," Hansen said. "In particular, morning types should limit their night work," he added.

While the study found an association between night shift work and breast cancer, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Men who work at night may also be at risk for prostate cancer, Hansen noted. This evidence comes from three small studies, he said.

Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said that "it's very hard to single out the causes of breast cancer and whether women on the night shift have a higher risk."

But there appears to be some truth to this, she added.

"Stress increases the risk of breast cancer and affects the body as a whole, and working at night can throw off your circadian rhythm and cause stress," Bernik said.

"This is another finding that breast cancer is caused by a multitude of different environmental and genetic influences, so this is probably a piece of the puzzle," she added.

An expert on environmental factors that affect cancer, Richard Stevens, from the department of community medicine at the UConn Health Center in Farmington, Conn., said that "the evidence is growing rapidly about light at night and, specifically, shift work and breast cancer."

"But, this is the first study about the morning/evening preference," he noted.

"If it's true that light at night increases the risk of disease, then there are very practical implications," Stevens said.

If lighting is really an issue in night work, it is known which wavelengths suppress melatonin the most, and lighting could be adjusted to eliminate those wavelengths, he explained.

There are other things people can do to avoid the effects of light at night on health, he added.

"For example, for health in general, if you wake up during the night, stay in the dark; don't turn on the light. If you turn on the lights it will start suppressing melatonin immediately," Stevens said.

"There is a lot more involved than melatonin, but it's a good marker if your circadian rhythm is being changed," he said.

Studies are ongoing on the risk of night work and prostate cancer, Stevens noted.

(AP) ? A powerful earthquake killed at least 15 people and left 200 injured Tuesday as it rocked a swath of northern Italy. Factories, warehouses and churches collapsed, dealing a second blow to a region where thousands are still homeless from another temblor just nine days ago.

The 5.8 magnitude quake left 14,000 people homeless in the Emilia Romagna region north of Bologna, one of Italy's most agriculturally and industrially productive areas.

It was felt from Piedmont in northwestern Italy to Venice in the northeast and as far north as Austria. Dozens of aftershocks hit the area, some registering more than 5.0 in magnitude.

The temblor terrified many of the thousands who have been living in tents or cars since the May 20 quake and created a whole new wave of homeless.

"I was shaving and I ran out very fast, half dressed," a resident of Sant'Agostino, one of the towns devastated in the quake earlier this month, told AP Television News.

Tuesday's quake struck just after 9:00 a.m. with an epicenter 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Bologna, according to the U.S. Geological Survey ? just a handful of (miles) kilometers away from where the 6.0-magnitude quake that killed seven people on May 20 was centered.

Government undersecretary Antonio Catricala, briefing the Senate in Rome, said at least 15 people were killed, some 200 injured and seven people missing. The number of homeless swelled by several thousand, to a total of 14,000, he said.

While Tuesday's quake was about 100 times less intense than the one May 20, its death toll was more than twice as high. In both, the dead included workers killed by collapsing factories and warehouses.

In the town of Mirandola, near the epicenter, the church of San Francis crumbled, leaving only its facade standing. The main cathedral also collapsed.

Sant'Agostino's town hall, so damaged in the May 20 quake that it looked as if it had been bombed, virtually collapsed when the latest deadly temblor struck.

In a hastily called news conference, Premier Mario Monti pledged the government will do "all that it must and all that is possible in the briefest period to guarantee the resumption of normal life in this area that is so special, so important and so productive for Italy."

The region around Bologna is among the country's most productive. Italy is desperately in need of its industries, for the country is in the midst of another recession and struggling to tame its massive debt as the European debt crisis worsens.

Many victims of the new quake, like the one nine days ago, were at work in huge warehouses that collapsed, including one dead inside a machinery factory in Mirandola.

Labor Minister Elsa Fornero suggested the destruction to buildings was out of proportion, considering the magnitude of the quake.

"It is natural that the earth shakes. But it is not natural that buildings collapse," Fornero said, briefing lawmakers in the lower Chamber of Deputies in Parliament.

The mayor of San Felice sul Panaro told Sky News 24 that there were fatalities in his town, where Italian media said a tower had collapsed.

Tall buildings and schools were evacuated as far away as Milan as a precaution before people were allowed to re-enter. Train lines connecting Bologna with other northern cities were halted while authorities checked for any damage.

When the quake hit, Monti was meeting with emergency officials in Rome to discuss the impact of the earlier quake, which struck in the middle of the night and left at least 7,000 homeless.

The May 20 quake was described by Italian emergency officials as the worst to hit the region since the 1300s. In addition to the deaths, it knocked down a clock tower and other centuries-old buildings and caused millions in losses to a region known for making Parmesan cheese. Its epicenter was about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Bologna.

It's not clear why two large quakes have appeared just this month, said Jessica Turner, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo. The basic driver of the activity is the same kind of geological shifting that produced the Alps, she said.

Prior to May 20, the last earthquake in the region with magnitude that large was in 1501.

Residents had just been taking tentative steps toward resuming normal life when the second quake struck. In Sant'Agostino, a daycare center had just reopened.

In the town of Concordia, the mayor had scheduled a town meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the aftermath of the first quake. Instead, mayor Carlo Marchini confirmed the death of one person struck by falling debris in the town's historic center.

Italy's friendly soccer match against Luxembourg, a warm-up match for the Euro 2012 championships, was canceled. The game had been scheduled to be played Tuesday in Parma, just 40 miles (60 kilometers) west of the quake.

Protesters set themselves on fire near Tibet temple

Since January, demonstrations have erupted across the Tibetan areas of China. For more than a year now, Tibetans have been setting themselves on fire as a form of protest against Chinese rule, the latest being a father of three. A warning, this report from our International editor Lindsey Hilsum does contain very distressing images.

By msnbc.com news services

Two men engulfed themselves in flames outside a temple popular with tourists in Lhasa ? the first time such protests at Chinese rule have reached the tightly-guarded Tibetan capital.

The self-immolations are thought to be the first in Lhasa and the second inside Tibet, the BBC reported Monday.

One of the men died and the other was hospitalized after they set themselves on fire Sunday outside the Jokhang Temple, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

From March: Tibetan man sets himself on fire

At least 34 Tibetans have set themselves on fire since March 2011 in protest against China's six-decade rule over Tibet, according to Tibetan rights groups. At least 24 have died, Reuters reported.

A growing number of Tibetans is protesting regularly against Chinese rule, demanding an end to what they say is relentless repression by Beijing. NBC News' Adrienne Mong has more on the latest -- including rare footage of monks demonstrating in Qinghai Province.

Turmoil builds in Tibet

China has branded the self-immolators "terrorists" and criminals and has blamed exiled Tibetans and the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, for inciting them.

Grisly videos of the self-immolation are regularly posted on activist websites?such as Free Tibet.

Beijing considers the Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in India in 1959 after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule, a separatist. The Dalai Lama says he merely seeks greater autonomy for his Himalayan homeland.

Harish Tyagi / EPA

See images of the life of Tenzin Gyatso, the 14 Dalai Lama and exiled spiritual leader of Tibet's Buddhists.

China says Tibet has always been part of its territory, but many Tibetans say the Himalayan region was virtually independent for centuries until Chinese troops invaded in the 1950s.

Protests have become rare in remote Tibet and Lhasa in particular because of tight police security that has blanketed the area since anti-government riots erupted in Lhasa in 2008, the Associated Press reported.

China struggles to contain wave of defiance in Tibet

Chinese authorities have confirmed some of the self-immolations over the past year but not all.

The twin immolations in the heart of Tibetan capital are certain to embarrass the region's communist leadership, who have pledged to make social stability and ethnic unity top priorities. That mandate is especially pressing this year as China prepares for a once-a-decade leadership transition in the fall and doesn't want the occasion undermined.

Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, talks to TODAY's Ann Curry about his conversation with President Obama and his thoughts about the spirit of American resilience.

U.S.-funded radio broadcaster Voice of America said the two men worked at a Lhasa restaurant called Nyima Ling. It identified one of the men as 19-year-old Dorjee Tseten but was unable to give the name or age of the other.

Dalai Lama donates $1.7 million prize to charity

"This was the first time it has happened in Lhasa ? and right in the middle of Lhasa," said Tenzin Tsundue, a Tibetan poet and one of the most prominent activists living in India.

Use new nonprofit research tool for charitable donors ? Business ...

The IRS has launched a new online tool, Exempt Organizations (EO) Select Check, which makes it easier for charitable donors to research tax-exempt organizations.

Now you can go to one location (www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=249767,00.html), select a tax-exempt organization and check to see if it?s eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. Users may rely on this list in determining charitable donation deductions. Similarly, you can find out if an organization?s tax-exempt status has been revoked for failing to file a Form 990-series return or notice for three consecutive years.

EO Select Check also offers several improved search functions. Read www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=249768,00.html for suggestions on how to best use the search application.

Ford, Microsoft Tout Focus Electric Technologies as the Future of More Affordable, Efficient Transportation

Ford and Microsoft appearing this week at the Future in Review Conference (FiRe) ? a forum for leading technology experts ? to demonstrate how the new 2012 Focus Electric?s technologies can help address future global transportation challenges

Customers can charge the Focus Electric in half the time of Nissan Leaf due to the car?s higher-capacity on-board charger and at a reduced cost thanks to Microsoft?s value charging technology ? a key benefit of the MyFord? Mobile app

MyFord Mobile users can monitor charging, receive alerts, find charge stations, plan trips and more from their smartphones or computers, making the transition to a battery electric vehicle lifestyle effortless

Focus Electric is rated America?s most fuel-efficient five-passenger vehicle with an EPA-estimated 110 MPGe city while offering more motor power, passenger room and standard features than Nissan Leaf

As the first Focus Electric gas-free models arrive at dealerships, Ford and Microsoft executives are highlighting the car?s connectivity and recharging technologies as the kind of innovations required to help address global transportation challenges such as congestion and oil dependency.

The executives are joining other technology leaders through Friday at the Future in Review Conference (FiRe), a forum to discuss ways to solve even bigger looming issues such as global gridlock that could happen in major cities if urbanization and vehicle ownership growth continue unchecked.

?Ford and Microsoft continue to demonstrate the importance of marrying automobiles with creative technologies such as the features built into SYNC? and MyFord? Mobile that help people stay connected to their digital lives,? says Sheryl Connelly, Ford Global Trends manager. ?These innovations will be even more important in a future where urbanization and growing vehicle ownership could literally grind major cities to a halt around the world.?

?Microsoft technology is opening up new possibilities for the connected car in areas that both augment and transcend today?s systems,? says Ben Smith, director of program management for Windows Embedded at Microsoft. ?From using simple voice commands to navigate to the nearest coffee shop or manage the interior temperature, to using the vehicle?s on-board technology to find the most economical place to charge up, Microsoft and Ford are changing the way people interact with their vehicle.?

Ford and Microsoft jointly released the first generation of SYNC in 2007 as part of a shared commitment to creating a better-connected car experience through the Ford SYNC software platform. SYNC has been a hit with customers since the initial version was launched in late 2007, with more than 4 million Ford vehicles now equipped with SYNC.

Combining forces on EVs

SYNC is one of many technology features available on the gasoline-free 2012 Ford Focus Electric and is shared across Ford?s electrified vehicle lineup. SYNC with MyFord Touch? offers multiple ways ? including voice commands ? for customers to manage and control their phone, navigation, entertainment and climate functions. Plug-in hybrids and all-electric models have additional options for monitoring information like battery state of charge.

Additionally, Ford Focus Electric customers have access to MyFord Mobile, which is accessible via smartphone or Web-based interface to perform key tasks. This mobile application can monitor a vehicle?s state of charge or its current range, locate charge stations and plan routes.

Off-peak charging

The MyFord Mobile app harnesses the power of cloud computing through another unique capability developed with Microsoft called value charging.

With value charging, the app keeps track of when participating local utilities switch to lower off-peak charging rates, helping to minimize costs by helping owners in the U.S. charge their vehicles at the cheapest utility rates.

Drivers can enable a single setting in the app and then plug in their cars without ever worrying about what time the rates change in their area. The network monitors utility rate schedules and automatically transmits a signal to the vehicle through embedded cellular connectivity to start charging at the lowest cost.

?The MyFord Mobile Microsoft value charging technology can help save customers money now and, in the future, lessen the pressure on our infrastructure as more electrified vehicles hit the streets,? says Bill Frykman, Product & Business Development, Ford Connected Services.

The MyFord Mobile app will be available for use on most major smartphone platforms including Android, BlackBerry and iPhone. The same capabilities can also be accessed through a mobile Web app for other platforms as well as a secure Ford website.

Retail production of Focus Electric began in May at Ford?s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich. After first being available in California, New York and New Jersey, Focus Electric will be available in 19 markets across the U.S. by summer?s end, nationwide by the end of the year. More information about Ford?s electrified vehicle lineup can be found online here.

No sprinklers in retirement home that caught fire | Metro

HAWKESBURY, Ont. ? The president of Ontario?s Association of Fire Chiefs confirmed Saturday that there were no sprinklers in a Hawkesbury retirement home where an elderly couple died in a fire.

Chief Kevin Foster said the deaths were ?even more tragic? as they come less than a day after a coroner?s inquest into a fatal 2009 fire at an Orillia, Ont., retirement home which also did not have sprinklers.

The coroner?s report called for retroactive installation of sprinklers in vulnerable occupancies like retirement homes ? a recommendation Foster said must be acted on with urgency.

?The two fatalities and injuries in a non-sprinklered retirement home further identifies the necessity to mandate this important improvement as soon as possible,? Foster said Saturday.

The provincial government announced a consultation on ?vulnerable occupancies? earlier this year which is set to wrap next summer, but Foster urged an acceleration in the project.

?The OAFC is hopeful that government recognizes the urgency to expedite the completion of the project and revises the target for implementation of the results prior to the end of this calendar year,? Foster said.

Friday?s fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. at the Place Mont-Roc home, about 100 kilometres east of Ottawa, forcing nearly 90 residents to evacuate.

Some were taken to hospital as a precaution, while others were taken to a nearby retirement home or put in touch with family.

Police have identified the couple who died as Anne-Marie Bonin, 84, and Jean-Paul Bonin, 87.

Two firefighters were injured. One was taken to hospital for heat exhaustion was later released.

The cause of the blaze, which broke out on the third floor of the facility, is unknown and the Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in, said Haweskbury Fire Chief Ghislain Pigeon.

?Sadly two perished, but 85 made it out of a very difficult situation.? said Pigeon, who commended the work of emergency crews which included a number of paramedics and volunteer firefighters from four stations.

The retirement home had been inspected in recent months and was up to code, he added. A sprinkler system was not part of building requirements.

?It was not a requirement when it was built and it is still not a requirement for this classification of building,? said Pigeon.

The lack of sprinklers in the Hawkesbury retirement home highlights the issues identified by the coroner?s report in the Orillia blaze.

That June 2009 fire at the Muskoka Heights Retirement Residence killed four people and left six elderly residents critically injured ? a toll fire officials called needless.

A number of the 39 recommendations made by the coroner?s inquest were related to automatic sprinklers and the retrofitting of such sprinklers in retirement homes and assisted living centres.

The Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs notes this was the fourth coroner?s jury to call for automatic sprinklers in nursing and retirement homes since 1980.

In addition, the jury recommended that smoke detectors be installed in all sleeping rooms, and automatic door closers and hold open devices be installed throughout the facilities.

The jurors also recommended that all fire departments should develop and implement regular mock evacuation programs for retirement residences.
