Syria ceasefire appears to be holding

A UN-backed ceasefire to end 13 months of bloodshed in Syria appeared to be holding after coming into force at daybreak Thursday, prompting a call for fresh protests to test Kofi Annan's peace plan.

China welcomed Syria's decision to uphold a "comprehensive ceasefire" describing it as a step towards a political solution, as Russia called for more time for the plan to work.

After breaking a commitment to pull back forces from population centres by Tuesday under the agreement brokered by former UN chief Annan, there were still no signs of a withdrawal, monitors said.

"The situation remains calm in all the regions of Syria," said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, almost six hours after the ceasefire deadline.

A "few explosions" were heard in the town of Zabadani, just outside the capital, shortly after it came into effect, Abdel Rahman told AFP in Beirut.

"There have not been any serious withdrawals of checkpoint of military reinforcements in Idlib, Hama, Homs, the province of Damascus or the northern Aleppo province," he said.

Activists in Damascus, Hama, and Daraa also reported that calm has prevailed since the deadline.

The reports could not be verified due to the Damascus government's curbs on media.

"The test will be tomorrow, when demonstrators take to the streets" after the Muslim Friday prayers, a traditional high point for protests, said activist Muaz from Damascus.

Just hours before the deadline expired at 6:00 am (0300 GMT), the military unleashed a lethal offensive against protest centres, killing 25 civilians on Wednesday, including 10 in the rebel stronghold of Rastan, said the Observatory.

That was the same day that Annan, serving as a peace envoy for the UN and the Arab League, said he received a letter from Syria promising to "cease all military fighting throughout Syrian territory as of 6:00 am."

But the letter reserved the right "to respond proportionately to any attacks carried out by armed terrorist groups," a phrase Assad's government uses to describe opposition forces.

US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed in a telephone call that the UN Security Council, which gave its blessing to Annan's plan, needed to "take more resolute action" on Syria.

The United Nations estimates more than 9,000 people have been killed since March 2011 as Assad's forces crush the latest in a series of uprisings against authoritarian leaders in the Arab world.

Susan Rice, the US envoy to the United Nations, said Assad's regime has in fact intensified violence since it first committed to Annan's six-point plan on April 1.

"Its commitments therefore have little, if any, credibility ... given that track record," Rice said.

Annan's plan calls for the withdrawal of forces from urban areas, a halt to fighting, a daily two-hour humanitarian truce, the release of arbitrarily detained people, freedom of movement for journalists and the right to demonstrate.

The opposition Syrian National Council said both it and the rebel Free Syrian Army, a ragtag force of mainly army defectors, were committed to the truce but also voiced doubts about the regime's commitment.

SNC chief Burhan Ghalioun called on people to demonstrate "because the right to demonstrate is a principle point of the plan of Annan."

He urged the international community to "monitor its implementation in full, mainly the right to demonstrate... and to provide the means to protect the people if the regime violates the plan."

"International observers should be on the ground as soon as possible," he said.

Ahead of the ceasefire, foreign ministers of the Group of Eight major industrial powers met in Washington for talks on Syria and other global crises, with both Britain and France pressing for monitors to verify any eventual ceasefire.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe called for the Security Council to seek a "robust observers force" that would verify compliance and "could move freely" without interference from Assad's regime.

On Thursday, Annan is to brief the Security Council by video link from Geneva, in what diplomats said would be key to the world body's next steps.

Russia has historically been the top supporter of Assad, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had said she would press Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over Syria during the G8 talks.

Lavrov said some Arab and Western states had written off Annan's peace plan as a failure even before it had gone into effect and called on them to use their influence with the rebels to avoid future unrest.

In Beijing, foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said Syria's commitment to the ceasefire "will help ease the tense situation in Syria, and is an important step towards a political solution."

Moscow, which along with China vetoed two Security Council resolutions that would have tightened the screws on Assad, has championed the Annan peace plan but also sought pressure against the Syrian opposition.

Western governments argue a ceasefire alone is not enough and that the Damascus regime must withdraw its troops from towns and cities.

The photographic work of Alfonso Brezmes lies on the border of fiction and gaming. His photographs are imbued with great visual poetry. In the series Paradise under construction, the viewer is transported to an imaginary country, a sort of lost Eden, a surreal world where everything is possible. One comes across strange creatures out of the mist: mysterious characters, travelers, lost children wandering among the ruins of a lost paradise.

Between the jungle and the icebergs, Alfonso Brezmes depicts the remains of an idyllic world that has been extinguished. Also known for his collages, and as a storyteller, the Spanish photographer takes the viewer into his world, inviting him to perform and imagine the rest of the story.

Alfonso Brezmes lives and works in Madrid, Spain. Paradise under construction is currently on view in a group exhibition at Galerie VOZ, Paris.

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan (AP) ? Ice hockey is hardly the most suitable sport for a desert nation where temperatures can soar as high as 50 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit).

And yet, Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov has ordered state enterprises and departments to create a hockey league.

State daily Neutral Turkmenistan reported Wednesday that the police are already busy setting up their own team.

Turkmenistan has overcome the weather issue by using revenue generated from its natural gas exports to build costly indoor skating rinks.

Critics of the idea are unlikely to make their thoughts public in a country where government opponents face severe reprisals.

Berdymukhamedov has in recent months been busily preaching the need for his former Soviet Central Asian nation to become a sporting power and has personally led the way by showing off his active side.

At the weekend, he donned ice hockey garb and skated in front of thousands of people at a recently constructed indoor arena in the capital, Ashgabat. Afterward, teams played in the country's first ever ice-hockey tournament ? one of several events organized for the "Week of Health and Happiness" recently devised by Berdymukhamedov.

Earlier that same day, the president unexpectedly took part in a time-trial car race, and won.

These displays appear to be part of a state-engineered design to project the president ? who won presidential elections in February with 97 percent of the vote ? as a man of action.

The ceaseless idolization of the leader bears strong hallmarks of the cult of personality built by Berdymukhamedov's eccentric predecessor, Saparmurat Niyazov, who died unexpectedly in late 2006.

In previous outings, Berdymukhamedov has been seen jogging, playing volleyball, riding horses, cycling, practicing judo and taekwondo, and shooting at the firing range.

In the nonsporting field, state media has reported on Berdymukhamedov, a 54-year old trained dentist, removing a tumor from a cancer patient and flying a plane.

This Martis Camp home has space for everyone.

Walk through the front door of this Martis Camp home and ?Hirshy? will catch your eye.? With tongue-in-cheek mountain humor, Doug and Chona Hirsch ? whose last name means ?stag? ? mounted this acrylic deer head on the fireplace at their great room?s far end.? There the deer sits in the light from a wall of south-facing windows and epitomizes what this Tahoe home is all about: a light-hearted, family-friendly environment showcasing a contemporary mountain style.

?We really wanted something both rustic and modern.? We?ve rented a lot of places in Tahoe over the years, and I felt like I had stockpiled all these ideas for when we were ultimately able to fulfill our dreams,? Chona says.

The Los Angeles-based family?s home was completed in 2010 after a fun collaboration between the Hirsches, Truckee architect Jason Wooley and Truckee builder Mark Tanner.? While the goal was to blend a family-friendly home with one ideal for entertaining, equally important to the team was to create exciting blends of styles and materials.

?This whole project inside and out is about blending a contemporary architectural aesthetic with a more mountain architectural aesthetic,? Wooley says.

The home often contrasts rustic reclaimed wood with contemporary elements such as steel detailing.? Heavy granite, indigenous to Sierraville, surrounds the black metal garage doors.? Mountain materials such as reclaimed picklewood, barnwood and ghostwood from a Montana reservation are mixed with pre-rusted corrugated corrugated Corten outside and exposed steel beams inside.? A tin corrugated ceiling in the kitchen contrasts with modern stainless steel appliances.

?They really like a contemporary look, but they felt it wasn?t entirely appropriate for this environment,? Wooley explains.?? Traditional gables face the street, but in back, a modern roof covers the large great room to open up the scenic view.

The project began with Wooley suggesting Martis Camp, the 2,177-acre private community in Martis Valley, as a site for the Hirsches? vacation home.? Their kids, Kaya, 9, and Zade, 7, can hop on their bikes and ride around the fishing pond, go to the Family Barn for bowling or walk to the sports pavilion, Chona says.? ?It?s a great place to try out their independence mode.? Having young kids and living in LA, we are not in a place where they can go down the street and get an ice cream.?

The Hirsches chose a long, skinny ?challenge? lot, but it had expansive views and was south facing, Wooley adds.

Taking advantage of this exposure, the home was outfitted with Sierra Pacific Windows? new bi-fold system that allows a wall of glass doors to completely open to the outside.? In the Hirsch home, this connects the indoors with an outdoor fire pit and a heated dining area.? They?ve sat by the fire pit and watched two bald eagles swoop into the pond, Chona says.

Within the great room is a variety of entertainment areas: a TV space, a game nook, a conversation pit by the fireplace, a large kitchen, an area with a 12-person expandable dining table and an office with panels that open to the great room.? There?s a pantry off the kitchen as well as a covered barbecue area.

?The great room needed to be great,? Chona says.? ?For my husband?s 40^th, we had 30 friends and it feels a lot more spacious than it is.?

A transitional space connects the great room to the entry and garage and includes a laundry room with a row of individual lockers for each family member?s sports gear.? There are high ceilings throughout the home with radiant heated floors to keep it cozy and warm.

The home fits 4 bedrooms and 4.5 baths into 3,192 square feet, plus a two-car garage.? The upstairs interiors are hardy and durable, with barnwood and contemporary furniture.? Small bedrooms were intentional, Chona adds, to draw family and guests out of their rooms and downstairs.? Each room has its own bath, however.? The children?s room sleeps seven with a wall of bunk beds, including one cubby bunk reached by a rope ladder, a response to the Hirsches? request to be able to accommodate three families at once.

?There?s not a lot of sleeping that goes on there,? Chona jokes.? In the center of the bedrooms is a kids? TV area.? Throughout the upstairs, there?s a delightful array of nooks and crannies, steps to guest rooms, popped-out window seats and built-in, custom furniture and cabinetry milled or welded in Mark Tanner Construction?s in-house design shop.

?It was all done with a budget in mind, as well as a desire for easy upkeep,? Tanner says, ?but the Hirsches allowed us to come across with different ideas and push the creativity.?

Chona says the home was built for less than $400 a square foot because Tanner?s firm was able to create elements such as a stainless steel sink and reclaimed wood doors.? The economy also lowered the cost of building, and Tanner had a knack for the serendipitous discovery of low cost, quality materials.

?So far, it has completely lived up to all the expectations,? says Chona.? ?There?s nothing we would change.?

So throw some fruit in the blender, and imagine yourself lying in a lounge chair, one foot dangling off the side, toes digging into the soft sand. A warm, salty breeze wafts over you, and the sound of the surf lulls you into dropping your book and closing your heavy eyelids for just a moment.

The easiest way to make this smoothie is with pre-cut, frozen bags of fruit. Take what you need, and leave the rest in the freezer for next time the urge for a taste of summer hits. It is refreshing, nutritious, and the perfect fuel for tropical dreams. You can substitute grapefruit for the orange, add a few spoonfuls of plain yogurt if you?re feeling frisky, or even a handful of finely chopped kale if you?re feeling particularly virtuous.

1 banana, sliced
1 cup mango chunks
1 orange, peeled and sectioned
1/2 cup coconut water

Let’s go back to basics for a bit. I’ve had a challenge thrown in my teeth. Southern Geologist didn’t intend it as a challenge, I’m sure, when he* said , “The big picture/history drags people in much more easily than discussing rock types.” But I’m a contrary sort of person. And something went ping . I see no reason why we can’t have our rock cake** and eat it, too. Besides, understanding the basic rock types is essential for geology. Most of you probably know them already, but what if a physicist or a biologist or one of those other hammer-deprived science types stumbles in here? We don’t want them going, “Ig-meta-whowha?” and running away, now, do we?

Besides, I have purty pictures and a snarky sense of humor. That will hopefully be enough to entertain those of you who can recite the three basic rock types in your sleep.

You can also improve the outside of your house by doing some simple landscaping. Nothing fancy, just plant a few flowers or bushes, and things will look fantastic.

So you see, there really are some things you can do that will make your house look a lot better. They won?t cost you much money, and you?ll feel much better about your home.
