Russell Brand Is In London Without Katy Perry And Isn't Wearing His Wedding Ring

The writing sure does seem to be on the wall here, doesn't it?

Neither Russell Brand nor his wife Katy Perry are wearing their wedding rings.

They're not jumping on a plane to be near each other, either.

Russell Brand isn't wearing his wedding ringThere's no wedding band to see here, peopleYesterday, we showed you lot pics of Katy Perry frolicking in a bikini with friends in Hawaii, with no sign of her husband Russell at all.

That's because he's shopping the sales in London after enjoying a few festive days in Cornwall, and a happy bunny he ain't.

Katy Perry shows off her bikini boobs in Hawaii without Russell BrandMeanwhile, Katy's flaunting her figure in HawaiiWhether it's because the paps interrupted his attempts at retail therapy, or because things aren't going well with the ol' 'trouble and strife', Russell couldn't raise a smile.

Or his wedding ring, if truth be told.

Katy Perry & Russell BrandIs it the end for Katy and Russ?7,000 miles apart at Christmas and no third-finger adornments to be seen?

We're crossing all our fingers that Russ and Katy don't join the celebs below - let's just hope it's enough.

By Amy Carboneau

Posted Dec 28, 2011 @ 12:07 PM

WAREHAM ?

A college student was transported to the hospital Wednesday morning after a four-car crash on Cranberry Highway, which included a police vehicle, said fire officials.

Fire Capt. Matt Rowley said officials responded at 9:15 a.m. to a collision involving a police truck and three other cars. The police truck was operated by a maintenance man, not by a police officer, said Rowley.

Only one driver - a college student - was transported with minor injuries to Tobey Hospital in Wareham, said Rowley.

No names have been released.

The accident occurred at 2544 Cranberry Highway, in Wareham, just outside the Total Auto Concepts auto detailing store.

No other information was immediately available.

Anthony Weiner Turned on by Men, Yearned for Threesome, Ex-Online Mistress Claims

Traci Nobles REALLY wants a publisher to purchase her proposal for a memoir about her interactions with Anthony Weiner.

Nobles, a woman who met the disgraced politician on the Internet and is doing all she can to profit from that experience, supposedly gave an excerpt to Radar Online of one of the conversations she shared with Weiner via Twitter.

Anthony Weiner at the Mic

Is Anthony Weiner smiling here at the thought of a threesome with another dude? Probably not.

Nobles says Weiner asked her about "3 ways" with him and "another guy" and, when pressed on whether he's turned on by men, responded:

"Well it depends on the guy, but generally yes."

Of course, there's no proof that this exchange actually took place. It's just the word of a woman who carried on a Web-based affair with a married man and is now hoping to write a book about it... versus the word of a popular congressman who ended his career in humiliating fashion because he just had to send photos of his body to random females he had never met.

Good luck choosing sides, readers!

Military Wives take out Xmas No.1

Last updated 14:04 26/12/2011

A choir of wives of soldiers serving in Afghanistan topped the British singles charts this week, beating X Factor winners Little Mix to the Christmas No. 1 spot and outselling the rest of the top 12 put together.

Wherever You Are by Military Wives, a song written using excerpts from letters sent between military couples, sold 556,000 copies, the Official Charts Company said.

All proceeds from the single go to The Royal British Legion and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen Families Association.

"It's a testament to the Military Wives' hard work and the nation's support of them as well as the power of choral singing," said Gareth Malone, the choirmaster who put the group together for a BBC television series, The Choir.

"I'm delighted they have found their voice."

The 100-strong Military Wives choir dislodged from the top spot a cover of Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice's Cannonball by Little Mix, a group of four girls that won this year's X Factor television singing contest.

Asia stocks mixed after weak US economy indicators

(AP) ? Asian stock markets were mixed in holiday-thinned trading Monday after weak U.S. indicators dulled optimism about prospects for the world's biggest economy.

Several markets were closed including Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and New Zealand. Oil traders were also on holiday. Wall Street and European stock markets are closed Monday because Christmas fell on a Sunday this year.

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock index finished up 1 percent at 8,479.34 after being closed for a public holiday Friday while South Korea's Kospi fell 0.6 percent to 1,856.70.

China's Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.7 percent to 2,190.11. Markets in India and the Philippines gained while benchmarks inTaiwan and Thailand fell.

Figures showing that U.S. consumer spending and personal income rose by a modest 0.1 percent in November were below market expectations. The headline 3.8 percent increase in durable goods orders last month masked a decline in a crucial investment measure, benefiting from big orders for Boeing aircraft.

The data offset some of the optimism in markets about the U.S. economy following a run of largely positive indicators. Since Thursday, investors have taken heart from figures showing that the number of initial jobless claims in the U.S. unexpectedly fell 4,000 last week to 364,000, the lowest level since April 2008.

While the U.S. economy has been the dominant driver in markets the past few days, Europe's debt crisis is likely to remain the key market focus next year.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 124.35 points, or 1 percent, to 12,294 on Friday in quiet pre-holiday trade. The Nasdaq composite index gained 19.19 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,618.64. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 11.33 points, or 0.9 percent, to 1,265.33.

In currencies, the euro was up 0.1 percent at $1.3068. The dollar was down 0.1 percent at 77.96 yen.

2012 MMA crystal ball: Where are these 34-somethings 12 months from now?

2012 MMA crystal ball: Where are these 34-somethings 12 months from now?Retirement is inevitable for every athlete. Whether it's voluntary or forced is up to the athlete. In fighting, it's too often forced. There's no exact age or time. Some guys have to walk away in their early 30's, others like the incredible Randy Couture, make it into their late 40's.

The end of the 2011 was unkind to several legends of MMA who are past their 34th birthdays. As a result, their careers are gasping for their last breath of air.

In 2012, we could see the end of the road for Tito Ortiz, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Matt Hughes. Then there's Brock Lesnar.

He's not a legend, but he is the pay-per-view king of the sport and yet his future could be in question following UFC 141. Lesnar has battled serious health issues and after his loss to Cain Velasquez 15 months ago, many question his passion for the sport.

During our "The MMA Insiders" show on ESPN1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas, Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, MMA analyst Frank Trigg and myself talked about who will be standing at the end of 2012.

Movies about South Africa ? 10 top films about South Africa

There have been many wonderful movies made about South Africa over the years, from histories to thrillers, gritty social realism to lyrical wildlife documentaries and broad comedy. In my mind, these are ten of the best - well, nine, with one still to be released next year!

1. Cry Freedom

Made in 1987, Cry Freedom was based on the best-selling book by South African newspaper editor Donald Woods and told the story of his attempts to uncover the truth of what happened to Steven Biko and Woods own subsequent escape from South Africa. Directed by Richard Attenborough, it starred Kevin Kline and Denzel Washington. With South Africa still firmly in the grip of apartheid at the time, Zimbabwe stood in as the location, with filming taking place in Harare. It was nominated for three Oscars and numerous other awards.

2. Sarafina!

First staged as a musical at Johannesburg's Market Theatre, Sarafina! was the brainchild of Mbongeni Ngema, who wrote the book, music, lyrics and even directed the show. An unlikely topic for a musical, it told the story of the Soweto uprisings of June 1976. The play transferred to Broadway on 28 January, 1988. The film, made in 1992, starred Whoopi Goldberg and Leleti Khumalo, who also won a Tony award for the Broadway version. It was directed by Darrell Roodt, Mbongeni Ngema wrote the screenplay, and South African singing sensation Miriam Makeba and actor John Kani also starred.

3. Cry, the Beloved Country

First published in 1948, the year in which apartheid was officially introduced to South Africa, Alan Paton's book was described by Nadime Gordimer as 'the most influential South African novel ever written'. It tells the story of a black Anglican priest heading to Johannesburg in search of his missing son.
It's been filmed three times. The first time was in 1951 by Zolt?n Korda, starring Canada Lee and Charles Carson, with Sidney Poitier in the cast. In 1974, a poorly received musical version was filmed, with a Kurt Weill-Maxwell Anderson score, directed by Daniel Mann, entitled Lost in the City. The exteriors were shot on location in Oregon. The third version was made in 1995 by South African director, Darrell Roodt, starring James Earl Jones and Richard Harris, with a screenplay by Ronald Harwood.

4. Tsotsi

Winner of the 2006 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Movie, Tsotsi is gritty, raw and profoundly moving, set In the hard world of the Jo'burg townships - a tale of teenage angst in modern South Africa. Tsotsi (which means "thug" in township patois) gets more than he bargains for when he steals a car and finds he's got a baby to look after.
Directed by Gavin Hood it was based on a novel by South African writer, Athol Fugard, originally written in 1960, but left unpublished for 20 years.

5. Zulu

Released in 1964, Total Film magazine readers nominated Zulu the 37th greatest Hollywood movie of all time, while British TV viewers rated it no 8 in their top 100 Greatest War Movies. It retells the epic battle of Rorke's Drift, at which a handful of 150 British soldiers fought off 4,000 Zulu warriors. Directed by Cy Endfield and starring Stanley Baker, Jack Hawkins and a very young Michael Caine, it was shot more or less on location in Kwazulu-Natal, although the Drakensberg Mountains were rearranged, closer to the battlefield to make it more picturesque!
A prequel, Zulu Dawn, about the battle of Isandlwana, was made by Cy Endfield in 1979 starring Peter O'Toole, Burt Lancaster and Bob Hoskins. It was directed by Douglas Hickox.

6. Invictus

One of the great box office successes of 2009, Invictus was a wonderfully heart-warming story of how newly appointed President Nelson Mandela used rugby to unite the fractured but sports-mad races in his country, winning the World Cup and the hearts and minds of his people. Directed by Clint Eastwood, it stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon.

7. District 9

In 2009, the Johannesburg townships got a bad dose of extraterrestrial prawns, courtesy of Peter Jackson, who left Middle Earth behind and went on a metaphorical spree substituting aliens for apartheid in the ramshackle backstreets of the multi-cultural melting pot. It was noisy and brash, everyone had a good time, it made money and it won numerous awards, including four Oscar nominations. Perhaps the best thing however was that with the exception of Peter Jackson himself and the money, which was American, virtually the entire cast and crew, including director Neill Blomkamp and stars Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope and Nathalie Boltt were South African.

8. Winnie

Due out in 2011, this major new bio-pic about controversial Winnie Madikizela Mandela is based on the book Winnie Mandela: A Life by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob. It does not have Winnie's blessing. Directed by Darrell Roodt, yet again Hollywood is turning out in force to play South African heroes (a topic that caused much dissatisfaction amongst South African actors' unions). The film will star Terrence Howard as Nelson Mandela and Jennifer Hudson as Winnie. It was filmed on location in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Transkei Mountains (Winnie's original home) and Robben Island.

9. A Dry White Season

Set during the 1976 Soweto Uprisings and based on a novel by Andr? Brink, this hard-hitting film followed the conversion to the cause of a white teacher, Ben du Toit, who came to understand the effects of apartheid. As he follows through on a personal crusade, the journey exacts a terrible toll on his own family life. The film stars Donald Sutherland and Janet Suzman, with Marlon Brando and Susan Sarandon. It was directed by Euzhan Palcy. Zimbabwe once again stood in for South Africa, where it was impossible to shoot films that tackled apartheid issues.

10. Catch a Fire

Directed by Philip Noyce and, starring Tim Robbins and Derek Luke, this follows the story of the apartheid struggle from the armed insurrection of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the military wing of the ANC in the 1960s right up to the reconciliation at the end of the apartheid era through the story of a young black man who unwittingly gets caught up in the struggle and the policeman who arrests him. The real Patrick Chamusso, on whom the film is based, appears as a walk-on, while writer Shawn Slovo's parents, leaders of the South African Communist Party and famous anti-apartheid activists, Joe Slovo and Ruth First, also appear. Her sister, Robyn Slovo, plays her mother in the movie. The film was shot in South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland.

India, Australia look to narrow gap with England

Calcutta (The Telegraph): Australia and India will aim to a narrow the gap with No.1-ranked England in the Reliance ICC Test Championship table when they lock horns in a four-Test series, which starts in Melbourne, on Monday.

If India make a sweep of the four-Test series, they will move to 122 ratings points.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side currently sit in the second place on 118 ratings points. That is seven ratings points behind Andrew Strauss' side.

Michael Clarke's men are in the fourth position on 103 ratings points. Third-ranked South Africa, who are currently playing a three-Test series against Sri Lanka, are on 116 points. The Proteas lead the sixth-ranked Sri Lankans 1-0 in the series.

In such a scenario, shuffling of the pack in the middle of the Championship table could be on the cards, depending on how the series Down Under (which finishes on January 28) and the one in South Africa (which finishes on January 7) pan out, according to an ICC media release, on Saturday.

If Australia win all the four Tests, they will jump to 111 ratings points and India will drop to 111 ratings. But India would still be ranked above Australia by a fraction of a point.

In case of a 3-1 win for Australia, the home side will rise to 108 ratings points and India will drop to 113 ratings points.

If the series turns out to be a 2-2 draw, it will mean Australia will gain two ratings points and India will drop two.

However, in a sharp contrast, if India make a sweep of the four-Test series, they will move to 122 ratings points and will narrow the gap with England to just three points. A 3-1 victory for India will put them on 120 ratings points, dropping Australia to 101 ratings points.

In case of a 2-1 series win, Dhoni?s side will earn one ratings points.

In the player rankings for Test batsmen, India's Sachin Tendulkar, who is one century short of becoming the first batsman to score 100 international centuries, is the highest-ranked batsman from either side in sixth position. The Master trails Pakistan's Younis Khan by four ratings points.

India also boast Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag inside the top 20, while Michael Hussey and Clarke are the only two Australia batsmen inside the top 20, in 17th and 18th positions, respectively.

Zaheer Khan of India in sixth position and Australia's Peter Siddle in 12th position will be spearheading their respective bowling attacks.

Ishant Sharma, Ben Hilfenhaus, Ravichandran Ashwin, James Pattinson and Nathan Lyon are the other bowlers inside the top 50 and they will certainly hope to improve their rankings.

Strikes over austerity hit Europe holiday travel

Holiday strikes to protest austerity measures paralyzed ground traffic in Belgium, delayed flights in Paris, and promised days of headaches for Christmas travelers around Europe.

Workers were walking off the job to show their ire at budget-slashing measures by their governments to tackle debt and high deficits, and officials were scrambling Thursday to try to mitigate delays and cancellations.

Eurostar and Thalys idled part of their popular service through Brussels as Belgian transport workers walked off the job. In France, a strike by airport security personnel stretched into its seventh day, and in London, football club Arsenal postponed its day-after-Christmas game against Wolverhampton Wanderers by 24 hours because of a planned public transport strike on the U.K.'s Boxing Day holiday.

The French government, anxious to avoid angering voters ahead of next spring's presidential election, was looking at options to get police to replace security personnel and make sure Christmas Sunday is as undisturbed as possible. Delays appeared to be shortening.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. Holiday travel: not so hellish after all?

Stressed about facing the holiday crowds at the airport this week? Contrary to accepted wisdom, the idea that the holidays represent the busiest days in air travel may be more myth than reality.

"The issue is to have airplanes take off so that the French people who have had a tough autumn and are feeling the crisis can get to their families and not be blocked at airports," Transport Minister Nathalie Koscusko-Morizet said on France Info.

In the Netherlands, doctors got in on the act, with about one in six holding a three-hour wildcat strike after Parliament approved plans to reduce their reimbursement for many common procedures. Doctors who participated said they were only available in case of emergency.

In Greece, train workers planned a five-hour work stoppage from noon Thursday, and in Spain more airline and transport action is expected next week, with Iberia pilots to strike again Dec. 29 over the state company's decision to launch a low cost airline. Meanwhile, the small CGT union has called strikes at the public rail company Renfe for Christmas and New Year's.

Portuguese unions, too, are biting back after a ?78-billion ($102-billion) international bailout earlier this year brought tax hikes and pay cuts in return. Train engineers are due to strike from Friday until Christmas day, protesting disciplinary measures imposed on them by the national rail company for allegedly failing to ensure minimum services during a recent general strike over the cuts.

The major unions in Belgium were protesting pension reform being pushed through Parliament for early next year that would require people to wait two years longer before early retirement. All but one of Belgium's major airports were operating close to normally, but intermittent road blocks by strikers worsened road delays around the capital. The strike also affected postal services, schools and hospitals.

At the Brussels South train station, the tracks of the popular Eurostar and Thalys trains linking London and Paris through Brussels with Amsterdam and Germany, remained empty.

"Eurostar and other onward connecting rail services will not be able to operate to or from Brussels during this period," the rail company said of the 24-hour strike.

Simply waiting a day would be tough for holiday travelers since the trains are often fully booked for days on end. All local lines were canceled on Thursday, too, keeping many workers home.

"Again, it is at the expense of travelers. We are literally left out in the cold," said Kees Smilde of the TrainTramBus consumer group.

Unions were especially irked that the government is trying to push through pension reform, sidestepping the traditional worker-employer negotiations that have become a cornerstone of the nation's welfare state system.

Workers "are striking against the government retirement measures because they are imposed on us in the absence of any kind of social negotiations," the Socialist ABVV union said in a statement. Another day of action is planned for Jan. 30, when a summit of EU government leaders is planned, and further wildcat strikes are expected.

In London, Arsenal was forced to take action after subway workers decided to stage a strike the day after Christmas in a dispute over holiday pay, a walkout sure to cause problems on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The London Underground's management calls the unions' demand for more pay and another day off "outrageous."

In Paris, the airport security personnel strike continued but delays were shortening and no flight cancellations were recorded at De Gaulle, Paris' busiest airport Wednesday.

Unions representing workers who conduct pat-downs on travelers and operate the bag-screening machines launched the walkout a week ago to demand negotiations over an increase in pay. It was timed for maximum effect during the holiday getaway season.

Vaclav Havel and Kim Jong-il ? moral opposites

Former Czech President Vaclav Havel was a victim of communist dictatorship; North Korean leader Kim Jong-il? was a communist dictator. It is time to correct a historic injustice and award Havel the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously for his lifetime achievements.

Last weekend saw the deaths of two historic figures on opposite ends of the world?s moral spectrum, a communist dictator and a victim of communist dictatorship.

Headlines around the world featured the demise of Kim Jong-il, the bizarre and reclusive head of North Korea?s maniacally despotic regime.

Subordinate coverage noted the passing of Vaclav Havel. This dissident Czech writer suffered years in prison because of his fight for national freedom from authoritarianism under the Soviet empire before his elevation to the presidency of a liberated nation.

One man headed half of a divided country that went to war to unite North and South Korea under communist rule, while permitting no domestic challenge to his monolithic power in the Democratic People?s Republic.

The other led a true democratic people?s republic and resigned rather than see Czechoslovakia split into Czech and Slovak entities; he later yielded to popular demand and agreed to serve as president of the Czech Republic.

The contrast in their rule and the nature of the governments they headed reflect the character of the governments that supported them.

North Korea?s sole ally and its chief sponsor and protector was and is the People?s Republic of China. The two communist states joined in the invasion of South Korea in 1950 for which they were condemned as aggressors by the United Nations when Kim?s father, Kim Il-sung, was in power.

Ever since, they have proclaimed themselves ?as close as lips and teeth.? Beijing has provided the government in Pyongyang with the material, political, and diplomatic support essential to keeping it in power. China has used its position on the UN Security Council to insulate North Korea from meaningful international sanctions as it built its nuclear weapons and missile programs. The two countries have also cooperated in fostering a network of nuclear and missile proliferation.

Facebook agrees to changes for those in Europe

Facebook has agreed to make several changes to its services to improve transparency and better protect the personal data of its millions of users outside of the U.S., following an in-depth audit of its international headquarters that was released Wednesday.

The social media company, based in Palo Alto, California, agreed to changes including asking European users if they wanted to partake in its Facial Recognition, reworking its policies of retaining and deleting private data, and reducing the amount of information collected about people who are not logged into Facebook, the company said in response to the report of the Irish Data Protection Commissioner.

Facebook's international headquarters are based in Dublin, Ireland, a member of the European Union. This means the company is required to comply with European data privacy laws, which are more stringent than those that apply in the United States, particularly regarding how long data can be retained.

"Facebook has committed to either implement, or to consider, other 'best practice' improvements recommended by the data protection commissioner," the company said following the announcement of the report. "Meeting these commitments will require intense work over the next six months."

The company has agreed to present its results in a follow-up to the report in July.

Facebook has been scrutinized for its privacy practices in the U.S., too. In November, the company agreed to submit to government audits of its privacy practices every other year for the next two decades as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC's complaint had alleged that the company exposed details about users' lives without getting their consent, as legally required.

It is standard for Ireland's data protection commissioner to audit any high-tech companies in the country to ensure that their practices are in keeping with the European law, and make recommendations to help them to meet those standards, should they fall short.

"It is not the object of the audit, to decide whether there is a breach of law," Billy Hawkes, the data protection commissioner, told reporters. "It is to help an organization achieve full compliance with law, put their compliance into best practice.

Facebook has repeatedly come under fire in Europe for a raft of complaints ranging from accusations that it sells personal data to advertisers ? a charge that the Irish authority said its findings did not uphold ? its Friend Finder application and "archiving" of data that users have deleted.

This is especially the case in German-speaking nations, where laws protecting individual privacy and the use of personal information are even more far-reaching than those covering the European Union, where Facebook has run up against several complaints from local data protection authorities.

A group of Austrian students calling themselves Europe vs. Facebook also took up the crusade, filing a series of 22 complaints directly with the Irish authorities in what they said was an attempt to force Facebook to follow the rule of the law.

"We are thrilled," said Max Schrems, 24, who speaks for the group. "It is far more than what has previously been achieved in Europe. There are a lot of things that they have to change, far more than what they have had to change before."

Barbara Ortutay in New York contributed to this report.

A: My colleague calls pets the most popular members of the family. I can personally attest to Lulu being the VIP of my household. The occasional biscuit or squeaky toy seems like a small gesture in exchange for the laughter and love I get in return.

?

If you are looking for ideas to reward your four-legged friends for the unconditional love they deliver every day of the year, consider these gifts that also pay it forward for pets and the planet.

?

Even pets can stand to reduce their carbon paw prints. Freddy?s biodegradable wand toys help cats burn calories and celebrate their hunting instincts, while protecting Mother Earth. Stock up on replacement feathers, just in case your little one is prone to pounce.

?

Big Daddy Biscuits ($5 to $15.50)

When Atlantan Lauren Janis decided to foster the stray dog found wandering near a federal penitentiary, she had no idea that pooch (aka Big Daddy) would symbolize second chances for her and other pets. As company mascot and head product tester for Big Daddy Biscuits, Janis? pup also helped her carve out a new career path.

?

?People say I saved his life, but Big Daddy saved my life,? says Janis, who bought a mixer and started baking organic dog biscuits after being laid off from an airline job in 2008.

?

Now the dynamic duo spends weekends at Georgia farmers markets, building a loyal following for their ?Flee Flea Cheese Bites with Garlic? and ?Dinner Mints? made with activated charcoal to aid digestion. Janis makes each biscuit by hand, incorporating locally grown eggs, organic flour and fresh-ground peanut butter. She also pays it forward by donating treats to Operation Second Chance (aka Jail Dogs), which pairs adoptable pets with inmates at the Gwinnett County Detention Center in Georgia until they find a forever home.

?

Rescue Chocolate bars ($5.49)

Pets can?t have chocolate, but they can benefit from your purchase of gourmet Rescue Chocolate bars with fun names like ?Mission Feral Fig,? ?Fakin? Bacon? and my favorite, ?Peanut Butter Pit Bull.?

?

New Yorker Sarah Gross put her sweet tooth and her business acumen to work by creating a chocolate company that supports nonprofit animal rescue organizations. Chocolate bars feature a cute picture of Gross? own rescued pit bull, appropriately named Mocha, and net proceeds benefit rescue groups such as the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti and the Humane Society of Miami.

?

Kitty Tumble Bed ($29.99)

Cats like to curl up and get comfortable ? anywhere and everywhere they please. Tumble beds feature corduroy exteriors and super snuggly Sherpa interiors that help well-behaved kitties cuddle up and say purrr. Net proceeds benefit Best Friends Animal Society, a Utah-based animal sanctuary that serves as home to about 2,000 animals.

?

Nobbly Wobbly ($3.99)

Lulu has quite an assortment of toys, but a super-tough Nobbly Wobbly may just land on top of the pile. Hide treats in the holes of this colorful knotted toy, or let your fur kid focus on the tinkling bell inside. Forty percent of the purchase price benefits the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

?

Unexpected Pit Bull calendar ($18.99)

I?m a sucker for pet calendars, especially when the models have an inspirational story. Unexpected Pit Bull calendars raise money for organizations committed to advocacy, education and rescue for the breed. Find out if your animal shelter or humane society sells a calendar. If not, maybe it?s time to start one on behalf of your favorite pet-friendly organization. In a previous column, I offer a few other tips to pay it forward by helping pets.

?

All the best to you and your pets.

(AP) ? As the FBI stepped up its efforts to find a 20-month-old girl who disappeared from her father's home over the weekend, investigators combed through trash bins, drained a stream and pored over more than 100 leads offered by the public.

Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey refused to speculate Tuesday on whether Ayla Reynolds was alive, saying authorities are focused on finding her. The investigation remains a missing-person case, he said.

Meanwhile, in his first public statement, the girl's father, Justin DiPietro, said he doesn't know what happened to her.

"I have no idea what happened to Ayla, or who is responsible," he said. "I will not make accusations or insinuations towards anyone until the police have been able to prove who's responsible for this."

The Portland Press Herald reported that DiPietro released the statement through the Waterville Police Department, saying his family and friends will do "everything we can to assist in this investigation and get Ayla back home."

Massey said the FBI launched a door-to-door canvass of neighbors to glean any information that may lead them to the little girl.

"We've ruled out nothing," said Massey, whose central Maine agency has combined efforts with firefighters, state police, game wardens and the FBI.

Ayla was last seen when DiPietro, put her to bed Friday night. He called police to report her missing the following morning, saying he found her bed empty.

"I have shared every piece of information possible with the police," DiPietro said in his statement.

On Tuesday, a state police evidence vehicle remained outside the home that DiPietro shared with his mother in Waterville.

State police stationed outside the house told reporters that the DiPietros were not there. Their whereabouts were unknown to the public, and The Associated Press could not find phone numbers for them.

While the neighborhood was canvassed, police were checking out trash bins across the city. A stretch of Messalonskee Stream a few blocks from DiPietro home was drained nearly dry so wardens could get a better look, both from the ground and from an airplane overhead, officials said.

Massey said each of the 100 leads that have been given to police was being followed.

Ayla's mother said she's trying to remain optimistic that her daughter is OK. Trista Reynolds said she's trying to keep it together for an 8-month-old son who remains in her care but acknowledges the past few days have been tough.

"Sometimes I think that she's OK. Sometimes I start thinking that the worst can happen. That's how I've been feeling. I lay my head down at night and wonder where she is. Am I going to see her again? Do I get to see her beautiful smile?" Reynolds said of her daughter Ayla. "She's my little girl."

Police said both of Ayla's parents, who live separately, continued to cooperate with police.

"Ayla Reynolds is etched in all our minds and reminds every investigator why it's important to stay focused and committed to the task at hand: to bring Ayla back home," Massey said.

The Reynolds family was advised after meeting with Waterville police to return to their homes 75 miles to the south in Portland to let police conduct their investigation. Reynolds and her older sister, Jessica, were staying in a hotel Tuesday to keep away from the media frenzy.

"I'm watching my sister fall to pieces," Jessica Reynolds said. "I don't think she has any tears left to cry."

Trista Reynolds told The Associated Press that she and DiPietro never lived together as a couple. But Reynolds said a drinking problem prompted her to enter rehabilitation in Lewiston for 10 days in October; she said that although her mother and older sister cared for Ayla during that time, child welfare agents intervened to place the girl with DiPietro.

Last week, Reynolds filed court papers that she hoped would lead to the return of her daughter. The filing occurred the day before Ayla was last seen in Waterville.

DiPietro said Tuesday that although he has sole custody of his daughter, "It has always been my intention to have a shared parenting arrangement with Ayla's mother and I will continue to work towards that when Ayla is returned to us."

Arrests as Occupy Wall Street tries to set up camp

Miranda Leitsinger/msnbc.com

Occupy Wall Street protesters in Duarte Square in lower Manhattan.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

Updated at 5:30 p.m. ET

NEW YORK, NY --? A?festive and celebratory mood quickly turned tense and angry Saturday as New York police arrested about 50 Occupy Wall Street protesters at?a church-owned lot?demonstrators?had hoped to use as a?camp site.

A dozen or so protesters climbed a wooden?ladder into the fenced?lot at Duarte Square, according to J.A. Myerson, a writer with Truthout.

He said George E. Packard, an Occupy Wall Street supporter and retired Episcopal bishop to the Armed Forces and Chaplaincies, was among those who had used the ladder to enter the site.

About a thousand people gathered across the street, where dozens of police tried to clear sidewalks as?people shouted and screamed at them. Protesters chanted obscenities and screamed: "Make them catch you!"

After the arrests, about 300 protesters made a?blocks-long, late-afternoon march to the church rectory.?

Earlier in the day, demonstrators played drums, cymbals and trombones, held group meetings and waved signs with a variety of messages -- "Disobedience is civil" and "Sorry to inconvenience your apathy" -- as they marked the completion of three?months with a major direct action that could give them a new home as authorities continue to shutter camps nationwide.?

Protesters -- flanked by police officers -- coalesced on a nearly half-acre plot about one mile northwest of their former camp at Zuccotti Park. But their potential new landlord at Duarte Square, Trinity Church, has voiced strong opposition, and the move by Occupy is seen by some as applying strong pressure to them to cave in and let the protesters install themselves.

Under the banner of "Re-Occupy," the protesters said more than 1,400 people -- elders of the civil rights movement, prominent artists, faith leaders and community members -- will help them try and set up camp there after they were evicted from Zuccotti Park on Nov. 15.

"I'm just loving seeing everybody from Zuccotti Park and it really puts an exclamation point on the (question) that's been asked today so many times, 'Do you guys need a space?' ... and the answer is, 'yes.' When you walk around and see the familiar faces and the kindred spirits and the unification of effort, then you realize yes we do need a space so that we can all be together and function as whole as a group and move forward, no doubt," said Thorin Caristo, a 37-year-old protester who is part of an independent livestream team.

It was a festive atmosphere, with people being photographed at the "99% photobooth" and people dancing around musicians and chanting, "Occupy." A group of hunger strikers with a sign reading "Day 15" also gathered at the site.

Miranda Leitsinger/msnbc.com

A protesters plays the drums at Occupy Wall Street's bid to take over a lot in lower Manhattan.

"Outdoor public space plays a crucial role in this civic process and encourages open, transparent organizing in our movement, unbeholden to a broken political system.?As we saw in Liberty Square (Zuccotti Park), outdoor space invites people to listen, speak, share, learn, and act.?It is a source of inspiration and empowerment," Occupy Wall Street said in a statement.

Trinity Church has provided the protesters with meeting rooms and use of their neighborhood center but is opposed to having them stay at the Duarte Square lot. An attempt to move in there on Nov. 15 was rejected by the church.

?In all good conscience and faith, we strongly believe to do so would be wrong, unsafe, unhealthy and potentially injurious,? its rector, The Rev. Dr. James H. Cooper, said in a statement dated Dec. 9 and posted to the church website. ?The health, safety and security problems posed by an encampment here, compounded by winter weather, would dwarf those experienced at Zuccotti Park. Calling this an issue of ?political sanctuary? is manipulative and blind to reality.?

Linda Hanick, a spokeswoman for the church, said earlier this week that their position would not change and on Friday, a statement from the city's bishop sided with Trinity.

The church's operations include an Episcopal parish, a commercial realty business and a grant-making organization.

"Here's a extremely wealthy church ... that can choose between its real estate empire and its conscience. This would be a big help to social justice organizing," Bill Dobbs, of the public relations working group, said Friday.

Miranda Leitsinger/msnbc.com

Occupy think tank working group meets at Duarte Square in lower Manhattan as part of their bid to set up a new camp.

Dobbs said the movement had suffered a ?setback? with the loss of its camp, but the organizing and protests had continued.

Still, ?it sure is helpful to have ? a center of gravity,? he said.

One of the former leaders of the Students for a Democratic Society, Todd Gitlin, said the movement "stands on the sidewalk."

"It's in the process of adjusting to two things: Number one, the loss of camps, and number two, we stand on the brink of an election year," Todd Gitlin, a sociologist and journalism professor, said standing near the fence encircling the proposed new camp. "The eviction means that what was already a major tendency in the movement is even more prominent now, namely decentralism. It's dispersed. Lots of things are going on all the time."

If they don't succeed in taking the lot, Gitlin said he didn't think it was a big deal, noting that Occupy Wall Street had become a more organized structure since it began with events going on all the time: "I think it's always a mistake to judge very much from what happens on a particular day."

The protesters say they?ll do things differently this time with a new camp to prevent problems -- such as a few assaults -- that tainted their efforts at Zuccotti Park. There won?t be personal tents, for example, only large ones for group meetings, said Brendan Burke, 41, of Brooklyn, who helped start the Occupy Wall Street security team.

Ashley Perry, 24, traveled from her home in Tampa, Fla.., to support her New York counterparts.

?This whole occupation has been a lesson in freedom for me," Perry said, adding, "If you still think that you?have your First Amendment rights, go out and try to express them? and see how long it takes for someone to come?and shut you down -- it will happen quickly."

Occupy Wall Street would not be the first of the movement's encampments to set up in a church-owned space: In London, protesters are occupying the forecourt of St Paul?s Cathedral, next to the London Stock Exchange.

Barracuda babies: Novel study sheds light on early life of prolific predator

Friday, December 16, 2011

For anglers and boaters who regularly travel the coasts of Florida the great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) is a common sight. Surprisingly, however, very little is known about the early life stage of this ecologically and socio-economically important coastal fish.

In the journal Marine Biology, lead author Dr. Evan D'Alessandro and University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science colleagues Drs. Su Sponaugle, Joel Llopiz and Robert Cowen shed light on the larval stage of this ocean predator, as well as several other closely related species.

"Due in large part to the expense and difficulty of collecting fish larvae from the open ocean, the larval ecology of barracuda were a mystery until now," said D'Alessandro. "A research study led by Dr. Robert Cowen, which sampled the Straits of Florida regularly for two years, provided a unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of the larval life of many fishes."

The study samples included great barracuda (92.8%) and their relatives Sphyraena borealis and Sphyraena picudilla (6.6%), commonly known as sennets.

In their larval stage, which generally lasts several weeks, barracuda and sennets remain in the upper 25 m of the ocean and live on a similar diet. They start out consuming copepods, or small crustaceans, but make an early switch to a diet of fish larvae, much like several larval billfishes and tunas.

"Barracuda are an important element in the marine food chain; they are voracious predators of other fishes as juveniles and adults on reefs and other nearshore habitats. Now we know this holds true for their larval stage before they reach an inch in length, as well," said D'Alessandro. "This novel study unlocks important aspects of the barracuda's life cycle. It also identifies an important size advantage within the larval stage (bigger larvae are more likely to survive) and provides insight that resource managers can use to better manage this species."

?Santa? Ford delivers Christmas Falcon

Ford Falcon EcoLPiBowser relief: Ford has achieved marginal fuel savings on its LPG-powered Falcons.

Bowser relief: Ford has achieved marginal fuel savings on its LPG-powered Falcons.

Holiday cheer as trucks line up at Ford for the big Falcon facelift rollout

FORD?S facelifted Falcon is set to start rolling out to dealerships from the company?s Campbellfield factory in Victoria from Monday, granting many Blue Oval dealers their Christmas wish.

Others might have to wait a week or two for their first truckload of FG Mark II sedans and utes, depending on their distance from the plant, but all should have demonstrator stocks of six-cylinder models by early January.

They will have to wait a few more months for the headline act of the new range ? the much-vaunted 2.0-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost Falcon ? but in the interim they can console themselves with price cuts of between $2555 and $3655 and more equipment on the six-cylinder cars that now start below $40,000 for the $37,235 XT (plus on-road costs).

As well, Ford engineers have slipped a little extra cheer into dealers? Christmas stockings ? marginal fuel economy gains on the LPG-powered EcoLPI sedans.

While fuel consumption test figures for petrol inline six models remain unchanged in line with the carryover engine made at Geelong, the liquid-injection dedicated LPG models get a 0.2 litres per 100km improvement across all gas-equipped sedan models.

The cut ? resulting from on-going calibration tweaks on the engine that was introduced a few months ago in the outgoing FG Falcon ? brings the combined fuel consumption figure down to 12.3L/100km on the base XT EcoLPI sedan and 12.4 on other gas-fed sedans (G6, G6E and XR6 EcoLPI).

Carbon dioxide emissions are down by between two and four grams per kilometre, and because LPG produces less carbon-dioxide per litre, the XT EcoLPI sedan becomes the first Falcon to achieve less than 200g/km, sneaking under at 199g/km.

For some reason, the same cuts have not translated to the gas Falcon Ute variants, which remain at 13.9L/100km and 226g/km.

The most efficient petrol Falcons ? at least until the EcoBoost models arrive in about April ? remain the XT and XR6 automatic sedans at 9.9L/100km and 236g/km, rising to 12L/100km for the XR6 Turbo sedan (12.7L/100km for the XR6 Turbo ute).

Rival Holden?s six-cylinder Commodore has an official combined fuel figure of 8.9L/100km for the 3.0-litre SIDI sedan, rising to 9.5L/100km for the 3.6-litre auto models.

Although no fuel figures for the EcoBoost Falcon have been released, Ford insiders have hinted that the 177kW turbocharged, direct-injected engine should deliver significant fuel savings and eclipse the best from the Commodore range.

Anaheim will not wait on NBA Kings

Seven months later, what's going on with the Anaheim Royals?

Excuse me, they're still the Sacramento Kings, aren't they?

Sacramento Kings fan Ralph Miller IV, 9, holds a sign conveying his sentiments during the Sacramento Kings NBA basketball game against the Lakers in Sacramento last April. Many were expecting the Kings to move to Anaheim's Honda Center.

RICH PEDRONCELLI, ASSOCIATED PRESS

My apologies. Anaheim Royals was the name trademarked by the Maloof family, the owners of the NBA's Kings, while negotiating with Honda Center officials to move their franchise to Anaheim earlier this year.

Those negotiations ended abruptly on May 2, hours before the NBA's twice-extended relocation deadline, when the Maloofs bowed to league pressure and announced the team was staying in Sacramento at least another year to give city officials one final chance to secure funding for a new arena in the state capital.

Seven months later, the foot-dragging continues in Sacramento, with no arena financing plan in place and the NBA's March 1 relocation deadline looming on the horizon.

How time flies when progress is as slow as a glacier.

The Sacramento City Council on Tuesday night voted 7-2 in favor of exploring the concept of privatizing city-owned parking to raise money for the arena project.

A city-commissioned report estimates that privatizing (or monetizing) parking in a 50-year lease with a private operator could bring in from $170 million to $245 million, thereby providing the lion's share of financing for the proposed $406 million arena. But that, too, is a slow process that could take months to finalize.

And yet the Sacramento Bee reports that city officials want to finalize "a financing term sheet -- detailing the various public and private contributions toward the (arena) project ? by mid-February." Want to? "Have to" is a more accurate statement considering the March 1 deadline.

But maybe we'll know more soon, because the Bee also reported that NBA commissioner David Stern will meet Friday in New York with Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson and Tim Leiweke, CEO of Anschutz Entertainment Group, the LA-based business conglomerate that apparently wants to operate, and likely will invest in, the new arena.

AEG, of course, has an ulterior motive in helping finance a new Sacramento entertainment and sports complex, because it owns Staples Center as well as a percentage of the Lakers. The Lakers' new TV contract with Time Warner Cable (reportedly $5 billion over 25 years beginning in 2012-13) also has a provision that reduces its value 10 percent annually if a third NBA team is in the market. So do you think AEG and the Lakers want the Kings in Anaheim?

The Lakers and AEG openly campaigned against the Kings' proposed relocation to Orange County earlier this year, but so far the move only has been delayed. In May, Stern promised the Maloofs they could file for relocation in 2012 if a "viable arena plan" doesn't materialize by next March.

Seven months later, there is still no arena financing plan in place. Sports management consultant Dan Barrett of Manhattan Beach-based Barrett Sports Group told the Sacramento Bee that negotiations with AEG have made "good progress" but negotiations with the NBA have not been "as productive as we would like, given where we are" with respect to the March 1 deadline.

So if parking privatization revenue comes up short and if other revenue sources from the private sector don't add up to the $406 million arena pricetag, how much will AEG be willing to pay ? and how much will the NBA contribute ? to keep the Kings from moving?

How much will the Kings and the Maloofs, who weren't even invited to Friday's meeting in New York, be willing to contribute to the arena project as anchor tenants?

Sacramento city officials have said they don't want to issue bonds to finance any portion of the new arena, probably because that would require a public vote that could scuttle the project.

All of this presumably will be discussed Friday in New York, and it's a safe bet Stern doesn't want to wait until March, either.

But don't make the assumption that Anaheim officials who negotiated seven months with the Maloofs a year ago are waiting in the wings hoping the latest Sacramento arena initiative blows up.

Michael Schulman, chairman of Anaheim Arena Management, the Henry Samueli-owned company that runs Honda Center for the City of Anaheim, said Wednesday that he had no comment on developments in Sacramento.

"We're staying out of Sacramento's affairs," Schulman said. "I'm really neutral. We would be happy if Sacramento got the new arena."

Interesting. Schulman also said AAM would simply "move on to the next team" that showed an interest in moving to Honda Center.

A warning shot, perhaps, to AEG and the Lakers that NBA basketball in Anaheim is inevitable?

A hint that another team (New Orleans, Charlotte or Memphis?) might be interested in moving here?

Seven months later, the intrigue continues.

Legal Schnauzer: Hulk Hogan Helps Prove Corruption in Alabama ...

Pro wrestling icon Hulk Hogan probably did not intend to do this, but he has helped us prove the monstrous corruption that exists in Alabama domestic-relations court.

How did "The Hulkster" do it? By coming to a recent settlement agreement in his divorce from Linda Bollea. The ex took a significant hunk out of Hulk's financial hide, which often happens in a divorce case where the lawyers and the judge are making some effort to follow the law.

Under the law, a marriage is a partnership--and each spouse has a stake in property that is acquired during the marriage, regardless of ownership or who holds the title to it. Such property comes under the banner of "marital assets" and is to be distributed in an equitable fashion in the event of a divorce. Reasonable people can disagree on the definition of "equitable," but the law is clear: Marriage affords you the right to share in each other's gains and losses.

In the Hogan divorce case, Linda Bollea clearly wound up sharing in Hulk's gains--as she was entitled to do under the law. But her positive outcome reminds us of just how badly some individuals, both women and men, can be cheated in divorce cases. Sherry Carroll Rollins, and her daughters Sarah and Emma, are classic examples of people who have been wronged by an Alabama court system that is hideously corrupt, especially in the domestic-relations arena.

We have written extensively about the Rollins v. Rollins divorce case. Sherry Rollins was married for 14 years to Ted Rollins, who belongs to one of the nation's wealthiest families, the people behind Orkin Pest Control and other enterprises. Ted Rollins flies around in multiple private air craft and has substantial business interests of his own; he has been president of St. James Capital and now is CEO of Campus Crest Communities, which completed a $380 million IPO on Wall Street last year.

How much did Sherry Rollins get of the couple's marital assets? Pretty much nothing. Under the law, she had a stake in any investments, properties, businesses, pensions, insurance, and more. What did she get? Thanks to Alabama District Judge D. Al Crowson, who did not even have jurisdiction to hear a case that started when Sherry Rollins filed for divorce in South Carolina, she got $815 a month in child support, $500 in alimony . . . and that's about it.

Now, let's compare that to the outcome in the Hulk Hogan divorce. Headline writers have been having a field day with the Hogan story, as you can tell from this tampabay.com article titled "Ex wife put Hulk Hogan against the ropes in divorce settlement." From reporter Rita Farlow:

Some might call it a financial smackdown.

Linda Bollea, 52, who divorced Hulk Hogan in 2009, received a little more than 70 percent of the couple's liquid assets in their divorce settlement, a recent court filing shows.

In addition, Hogan, 58, the semiretired professional wrestler whose real name is Terry Bollea, agreed to give his ex-wife 40 percent ownership in his various companies and pay her an additional $3 million "property settlement," according to the filing.

The confidential financial settlement came to light this week after it was attached to a new motion filed by Terry Bollea's attorneys.

So Linda Bollea got 40 percent ownership in Hulk's companies and a $3 million property settlement. And that's not all:
Details from the settlement show Linda Bollea received $7.44 million of the couple's $10.41 million that was held in bank and investment accounts. Terry Bollea got the remaining $2.97 million. . . .

Linda Bollea got to keep a Mercedes-Benz, a Cadillac Escalade, a Corvette, a Rolls-Royce and various off-road vehicles. Terry Bollea, who had an extensive collection of vehicles, got the rest, though they were not detailed in the agreement.

Sherry Rollins does not even have her own vehicle. She drives an elderly Subaru that is registered to Holly Rollins (Ted's current wife) or Bradley Arant (Ted's Birmingham-based law firm). For each of the past two years, neither Holly Rollins nor Bradley Arant has renewed the car tags in a timely fashion. Dawn Helms Sharff, who acts as Ted Rollins' primary corporate attorney, appears to be the responsible party, but she has mostly ignored repeated requests from Sherry Rollins to update the car tag.

Here is what Dawn Sharff's bio says about her duties:

Dawn serves as lead counsel on commercial real estate and commercial financing matters, often coordinating a legal team involving other Bradley Arant Boult Cummings attorneys, as well as local counsel in other states.

Sharff can handle all of that, but she can't handle a car tag on a vehicle that appears to be her responsibility? That's the kind of stuff Sherry Rollins deals with. Sounds like Linda Bollea won't be having such worries.

Some reporters have portrayed the Hogan story as one where Linda Bollea took Hulk to "the legal cleaners." But I doubt that's the case. I'm sure Hulk Hogan could afford adequate legal representation. His wife also must have had adequate counsel--and she apparently lucked into an honest Florida judge--and she got her equitable share of the marital assets.

The public record indicates that Ted Rollins, or someone working on his behalf, pulled strings to administer a monstrous cheat job on Sherry Rollins and the couple's daughters. I've written many times that it's the worst case of judicial corruption I've encountered in the civil arena.

And here is the stunning part: Hulk Hogan is a wealthy dude, but I'm betting that Ted Rollins leaves him in the financial dust. Hulk apparently made his money the old-fashioned way--he earned it by becoming a star on the burgeoning pro wrestling circuit. Ted Rollins was born with wealth and financial clout, thanks to his status as the son of the late entrepreneur John W. Rollins Sr.

Ted Rollins is CEO of a company that went public about a year ago to the tune of $380 million. His stepmother, Michele Rollins, is worth between $90 and $350 million.?Perhaps more importantly, Ted Rollins has been involved in business pursuits with his cousin, R. Randall Rollins, the CEO of Rollins Inc. in Atlanta. At last check, Randall Rollins had stock worth of $763.8 million--and that was in 2005. Our guess is that his total worth easily tops $1 billion by now.

Hulk Hogan has done well for himself, but I doubt that he's in the Rollinses' financial league. And yet, Sherry Rollins and her daughters qualify for food stamp in Alabama.

Doesn't look like Linda Bollea will have to worry about being on food stamps any time soon.
