NBA Rumors: Breaking Down Latest Buzz on Beno Udrih, Ivan Johnson and More

The NBA is in full-on hibernation mode as the calendar flips to August, but the rumor mill is still churning out plenty of buzz.

Prior to Friday night, former No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden had been the biggest name on the free-agent market, but after his decision to join the two-time defending world champion Miami Heat (per ESPN's Jeff Goodman), the focus will now shift elsewhere:

Below we'll break down some of the latest free agent chatter heading into the weekend.?

?

?

Memphis Grizzlies Eyeing Veteran Beno Udrih?

Veteran free agent point guard Beno Udrih is on the Memphis Grizzlies radar this August, according to Grizzlies beat writer Ronald Tillery via Twitter:

Udrih started the 2012-13 season with the Milwaukee Bucks before being traded to the Orlando Magic. The 31-year-old averaged 10.2 points and 6.1 assists in 27 games (nine starts) with the Magic late in the season.

The former first-round draft pick has proven to be a reliable backup point guard over the past decade, and would be a solid option behind starter Mike Conley in Memphis.

?

?

Ivan Johnson Drawing Interest from Half a Dozen Teams?

Free-agent enforcer Ivan Johnson appears to be somewhat of a hot commodity this summer. According to CSNNW.com's Chris Haynes, the former Atlanta Hawk has been talking with six different NBA teams.?

Which free agent PF is more valuable?

Which free agent PF is more valuable?

  • Ivan Johnson

  • Lou Amundson

According to the source via Haynes, there is no front-runner to land Johnson and none of the conversations have gotten serious with better big men still available.

Johnson appeared in 125 regular-season games for the Hawks over the past two seasons, averaging 6.5 points and 3.9 rebounds in nearly 16 minutes per night. He's played in 11 postseason games as well, scoring 4.5 points per game and reeling in 3.4 boards per playoff outing.?

At 6'8", Johnson is a bit undersized at the power forward spot, which can make him a liability at times defensively. But if a team can land him for cheap, his energy and strength on the boards make him a worthwhile short-term investment.?

?

Lou Amundson Looking to Capitalize on Greg Oden's Move

NBA journeyman Lou Amundson is one of several free-agent power forwards searching for a team this summer, but as ESPN NBA insider Marc Stein points out via Twitter, Amundson's future will likely be impacted by former No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden's decision:

Oden agreed to sign?with the Miami Heat on Friday night, meaning that the defending world champions likely won't come calling for Amundson's services anytime soon.

But that still leaves the 6'9" reserve with several interested clubs, including the Indiana Pacers, who he is familiar with having played in 60 regular-season games for them in 2011-12.

An active body around the rim, Amundson isn't going to score a ton of points in the paint, but his energy and leaping ability make him an excellent addition to any NBA rotation.?

Peter Capaldi named as next 'Doctor Who' star

LONDON (AP) ? The BBC says British actor Peter Capaldi is the next star of the long-running science fiction series "Doctor Who."

The announcement was made during a live television broadcast on Sunday.

The 55-year-old is best known as venom-spitting spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in political comedy "The Thick of It."

He is the 12th actor to play the Doctor, a galaxy-hopping Time Lord who travels in the Tardis, a time machine shaped like an old-fashioned British police telephone booth.

"Doctor Who" was first broadcast in 1963 and is now one of the BBC's most popular programs, both in Britain and abroad.

Its longevity is due partly to the flexibility of the premise. The Doctor can regenerate into new bodies, and can travel to any point in space or time.

(AP) ? Thousands of Islamists loyal to Egypt's ousted president are defying a government warning to disband their marathon sit-in protest in Cairo.

The defiance by Mohammed Morsi's followers has raised the specter of a new round of violence and concerns that security forces would move in to break up the protest camps in the eastern suburb of Nasser City and in Giza.

But by early afternoon Thursday there were no significant movements by Egyptian forces against the protesters in either camp.

On Wednesday, Egypt's military-backed Cabinet issued the order that the Muslim Brotherhood sit-in be cleared.

A Brotherhood leader, Essam el-Erian, said on his official Facebook page that "the people will be victorious."

At least 130 Brotherhood supporters have died in clashes with security forces since Morsi's July 3 ouster.

LOS ANGELES -- Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. reported July sales increased 17 percent to 193,394 units, led by strong performances by Camry, Prius, RAV4 and Avalon nameplates. It was the first time since March 2010 that Toyota had outsold Ford Motor Co.

Toyota Division sales, including Scion, rose 16 percent to 170,363, while sales at the Lexus brand jumped 26 percent to 23,031. Scion-only sales, though, fell 9 percent to 6,261.

Camry, with 34,780 sales, had its best July since 2010. However, Edmunds.com data showed that Camry incentives were at their highest level in nearly two years and were four times more than those on the Honda Accord.

'Momentum'

Bill Fay, Toyota Division general manager, countered, "I think we're fine. Industry incentives were up month over month, but our incentive spending is still below the industry average. We're in a good place. We've got a lot of momentum."

Sales of the Prius family of vehicles increased 40 percent to 23,294, for the best month ever for the nameplate. The recently redesigned RAV4 had sales surge 28 percent to 19,538, for the sixth straight best-ever month. And sales of Toyota pickups increased 16 percent despite the sell-down of the Tundra full-sized pickup.

Although sales of the outgoing Corolla rose just 4 percent, Fay called July "one of the smoother sell-downs for one of our core models." The redesigned 2014 model just began production.

Fleet sales were just 4.5 percent of the mix for Toyota Division, the company said.

Toyota will keep the incentives flowing with its annual "Clearance Event" in August, with "a series of APR and affordable leases," Fay said. Although marketing will be conducted nationally, the incentives will be established by each of Toyota's regions, with special attention paid to the Corolla and Tundra, he said.

Lexus leaders

On the Lexus side, the volume leaders were the RX crossover, up 15 percent to 8,437, and the ES sedan, up 62 percent to 6,089. The recently redesigned IS sedan also gained 59 percent to 3,641.

Lexus' strong run has prompted Jeff Bracken, the brand's general manager, to boost the brand's 2013 U.S. sales goal to 270,000 from 260,000 previously.

"As the best months of the year are still ahead of us," he said, "we are going to challenge ourselves even further."

2014 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Miami OT Seantrel Henderson

Miami Hurricanes Seantrel Henderson

Robert Mayer- USA TODAY Sports

Position: RT School: Miami
Height: 6? 8? Weight: 345
Class: Senior 40 time: N/A

It?s safe to say that things have not gone as planned for Miami right tackle Seantrel Henderson. He was considered by many to be the top recruit in the country coming out of high school, and Sports Illustrated called him ?probably the most polished lineman of the past decade?. Things began to change course when the gargantuan lineman committed to USC, and after they received a bowl ban following the Reggie Bush scandal, he decided to transfer in the middle of the summer preceding his freshman year. He ended up at Miami, and he?s never come close to living up to the expectations that were placed on him.

Over the past three years, Henderson has had back surgery, been suspended for an unspecified violation of team rules, and run a red light which caused a car accident and left him with a concussion. Due to all these incidents, as well as an inability to put up consistent results on the field, he has only started 18 college games, half of which came during his freshman season. It?s worth noting that Henderson?s back surgery could have had adverse effects on him, as he was named a freshman All-American by several publications his first year but has struggled to even stay at the top of the depth chart since.

With his current situation, Henderson?s draft status is very up in the air. Though he previously planned to enter the draft after his junior season, he decided to complete his career at Miami after he was told that he wouldn?t be taken until at least the middle rounds last year. Henderson believes that he can make himself a first rounder this year, but he obviously must improve. As of now, Henderson projects similarly to former Maryland tackle Bruce Campbell, as a raw tackle with good size who hasn?t done much in college. Campbell was a fourth rounder. But if Henderson falters again, it?s not completely out of the question that he could fall out of the draft completely. One thing is for sure; Henderson must improve substantially if he wants to give himself a shot at starting in the NFL.

Positives

  • Overpowering strength when he gets a running start
  • Good run blocker, very physical
  • Gets very good arm extension at times
  • Very solid when part of a double team; may be better suited as a guard in the NFL where it?s harder to beat him from outside
  • Pulls well
  • Plays in pro-style offense, good experience out of a three-point stance
  • Plays to the whistle, works hard at getting down-field when necessary
  • Performance may be looked on more favorably due to his inexperience; he has the opportunity to get much better at the professional level

Negatives

  • Major durability and character concerns, lack of starts due to back issues and concussion last year are offsetting, reportedly has had academic issues
  • Consistently allows rushers to beat him by going around his outside shoulder, even by second-teamers in Miami?s spring game
  • Horrible reaction time, will make him a turnstile in the NFL if not improved
  • Gets pushed back too much for a player of his stature
  • Not very mobile
  • Plays too high, knees don?t bend well
  • Bad cut blocker, when he drops to the ground defenders never go down with him
  • Bad running technique when running downfield, runs with feet wide apart
  • A right tackle at best; Miami has tried to move him to left tackle but he has never stuck

2013 Outlook

This is by far the most important season of Henderson?s career to date. He needs to be much more consistent for a team that is widely expected to finish first in the ACC Coastal Division and will be led by senior quarterback Stephen Morris. Henderson needs to avoid any more injuries or off-the-field issues, and if he wants to be considered in the first round next year he needs to dramatically improve his pass blocking. The spotlight will be on Henderson, and it?s time for him to once again execute on the potential that once upon a time made him the country?s top recruit.

An engine of destruction: The anatomy of a low-end Android phone

Android Emerging Markets Analysis

Last March, a low-end Android phone called Xolo Q800?debuted in Asia. The model?remains almost unknown in the Western markets, but it is a perfect specimen of a new class of Android smartphones that are rocking?both smartphone and mobile application markets in 2013. It is the Q800 and its brethren that actually explain a variety of?recent industry surprises, ranging from unexpected profit slumps of?high-end phone vendors?to Google Play?s sudden surge to ?take the lead over iOS in terms of overall mobile app downloads.

[More from BGR: BlackBerry Messenger for Android exclusively pictured for the first time]

Here is why?the Xolo Q800 is now setting the Asian handset markets on fire: It offers a quad-core 1.2 GHz CPU, an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 225 pixels per inch, all for a $160 retail price without subsidies. There have been appealing low-end Android models before this year, but this is?a watershed moment for the phone industry. These specs are just outrageous considering the price point.

[More from BGR: Next-gen iPad rear shell revealed in leaked photos]

Let?s compare the Q800 to the Samsung? Galaxy S Duos, which happens to be retailing at the same exact price point in India this week. The Samsung model at $160 offers a 1 GHz CPU, a 5 MP rear camera and a 4-inch display with a resolution of 233 pixels per inch. Samsung?s software quality, build quality and camera quality are clearly superior to what Xolo can deliver. But no matter: Xolo?s specs edge has helped boost the brand to?contest?Samsung?s budget devices and it is simply devastating comparable HTC and BlackBerry devices.

In addition to Lava?s Xolo brand, there are strong budget challengers like Micomax, Karbonn, Spice, Videocon? the list goes on and on. Brands that could not aspire to mid-market status two years ago are now going delivering rock solid entries in the $100 to $200 price bracket. This has been made possible by the modularization of the component industry. Vendors no longer have to spend money on doing R&D on antenna engineering or power management issues. They can simply buy component models and cram them into a plastic box.

This?won?t appeal to discerning buyers, but all of those already have a smartphone. The future global growth of the smartphone industry comes mostly?from families earning less than $10,000 a year. That is a hard, hard row to hoe for most?former smartphone champs. It also means that the mobile app industry may have to become increasingly accommodating to emerging markets. Brazil and Russia are soaring ahead of Germany and the United Kingdom in app download statistics.

The low-end Androids are destroying much of the old value structure of the mobile telecom industry while creating entire new opportunities for companies who can survive under intense price pressure. It will be an entirely new mobile telecom?market by 2015.

Welcome to the Dongle

Mario Queiroz, vice president of product management, holds the new Google Chromecast dongle as it is announced during a Google event at Dogpatch Studio in San Francisco, California, July 24, 2013. Get a Chromecast. It?s cheap. You?ll love it.

Google?s Chromecast doesn?t do much. But what it does do, it does so consistently well, and so cheaply, that it?s quickly became a primary part of my media-watching routine. Chromecast, a little USB-stick-sized device you might call a dongle if your mother didn?t teach you manners, streams Netflix, YouTube, and websites to your TV. (But wait a second, aren?t Netflix and YouTube also websites? Yes, but there?s a technical distinction we?ll get to in a minute.) Also, Chromecast is fast, unbelievably easy to set up, and pretty much foolproof to use. And it?s $35, which makes it one of the best values in tech, ever. Combine all that, and it?s irresistible. In the five days I?ve had it, Chromecast has become my go-to way for streaming shows to my TV.

It?s not that I lacked for ways to stream videos already?my TV, DVD player, and XBox all have Netflix and YouTube apps, and they?re pretty easy to use. But Chromecast is simpler, faster, and more intuitive than any of those. Other methods usually require four or five steps to set up streaming. First, you?ve got to turn on the TV, choose the right input, turn on the ancillary device, load up an app, find a show, and then press play. It takes a minute or two, and if your set-top box is really slow, maybe a lot more.

Chromecast eliminates a couple of those steps, and it makes others much faster. In this way, Chromecast is similar to other small digital set-top boxes, especially the Roku ($98 or $50) and the $96 Apple TV (though there are some important differences I?ll get to below). With Chromecast, you turn on the TV. Then you load up Netflix (or YouTube or Chrome) on any other machine that?s handy?it could be a PC, a phone, or a tablet, or whatever you have lying around. It?s much faster to navigate and type on those devices than on your set-top box, so you?ll find your show much more quickly. Then press play. On many TVs, you won?t even need to change you TV?s input?Chromecast will do that for you. (Depending on how you set up Chromecast?that is, if you plug its power cord into an external AC adapter rather than into your TV?s USB slot?you might not even need to turn on your TV at all; Chromecast might be able to do that for you, too.) So, anyway, once you find your show, press play. Like black magic, your video just shows up on your TV.

Does this sound complicated? It?s not. Once you have it set up, Chromecast becomes a natural extension of all of the devices in your house. When you?re watching something on pretty much any machine, you?ll be able to shuttle it over to your TV instantly without giving it a second thought. That?s a great deal for only $35.

Now, let me briefly mention a subtle but important technical limitation regarding how Chromecast works. The device streams videos in two ways?either directly over the Internet from a service like Netflix, or from the Chrome browser on your own computer. The first of these methods is the better one?because the video is coming directly from Netflix, your phone or PC is acting only as the remote, and you can turn it off after you?ve started watching the video. The downside is that, at the moment, only YouTube, Netflix, and Google Play support this direct streaming method.

Chromecast also lets you stream anything that you have open in a Chrome tab to your TV. Technically, this means you can play any Web video service on Chromecast, even HBO Go, Hulu, or even a Bittorrent-ed video that you drag into Chrome. All you do is play the video on your laptop in Chrome, then press the button to stream to your Chromecast. But this method?streaming from a Chrome tab?is kind of a hack. Because the videos you play this way come directly from your computer to your Chromecast, they require that your machine be on, and they tend to be of lower quality than the ones you stream from a service like Netflix.

I can already hear Apple partisans hissing at me for failing to mention the greater charms of that company?s set-top box, the Apple TV. And they?re right?in some ways, Chromecast isn?t as good as Apple TV. Apple TV plays videos from many more services, including Hulu and HBO Go, than you?ll find on Chromecast. Apple TV also allows for ?mirroring? from Apple devices, meaning you can send anything on your iPad over to your TV. Chromecast, meanwhile, only lets you mirror Chrome tabs?and only from a PC, not from your mobile device. So if you?ve got a bunch of photos in Picasa on your Mac, you won?t be able to stream a slideshow to Chromecast, as you can using Apple TV. But if your photos are in Flickr?i.e., on the Web?you will be able to watch them on Chromecast (as well as Apple TV).

But Apple TV has its disadvantages, too. First, it only works with Apple?s mobile devices. If your household has multiple machines running different operating systems?if you?ve got an Android phone and Apple tablet?then Apple TV may not be right for you. Also, Apple TV is $96. You can almost get three Chromecasts for the price of one Apple TV. If you?ve got several TVs in your house, Chromecast is obviously a better choice.

Plus, some of Chromecast?s limitations are temporary. Google has released an API for the device?a way for developers to get their services to directly stream to the device?and several firms, including Vimeo and Redbox, will reportedly begin adopting it. I suspect that soon, most of the services that work on Apple TV and Xbox will work on Chromecast, too. (One of the really surprising things about Netflix and YouTube?s support for Chromecast was that I didn?t have to update their apps on my phone to get it?the Chromecast button just showed up in the apps on every device. Watch for that to happen with every other video service you use.)

In some ways, though, the most important thing about Chromecast isn?t what it does. It?s what it costs. By setting a profit-free low price on Chromecast, Google is signaling that it?s not looking to make a lot of money on the device. Instead, it?s aiming for ubiquity. And ubiquity, in and of itself, will improve Chromecast. I don?t have any inside info, but if I were to venture a guess, I think Google?s ideal scenario for Chromecast goes something like this: 1) A lot of people buy the device. 2) A lot of media companies start supporting the device. 3) The dongle (sorry!) disappears?given the device?s popularity and low price, TV companies start building the Chromecast protocol into their TVs. In other words, Chromecast becomes the quasi-standard way of streaming, and every TV becomes a Google TV.

Out of these three steps, Apple, Microsoft, and Roku have already achieved the first two. But none of them can get to Step 3, because all of their business models depend on selling devices for a profit. Google?s does not. Google is instead interested in capturing the ecosystem?once every TV is a Google TV, the company will figure out how to make money from that, somehow.

Will that happen? I think there?s a good chance. For now, though, enjoy Google?s largesse. Get a Chromecast. It?s cheap. You?ll love it.

Apple wants low-energy chips, snaps up Passif Semiconductor

GigaOm writes, Well, if we wanted more evidence that Apple is interested in a smaller, wearable computing device, here?s some: the company recently acquired a chipmaker that specializes in low-energy communications, called Passif Semiconductor. The news was first reported by tech reporter Jessica Lessin. Passif?s chipsets are able to send information using very little energy and are said to include a Bluetooth LE (low energy) radio, which tends to be used for connectivity in small, wearable computers?and Internet of Things devices. These types of low-power technologies are super important for small?
