UK police: We regret using stun gun on blind man

LONDON (AP) ? British police apologized Wednesday for using a stun gun to subdue a blind stroke victim they wrongly thought was carrying a samurai sword, a bizarre case of mistaken identity that left the man fearing for his life.

Colin Farmer told British broadcasters that he thought he was going to die after he heard a commotion, felt electricity surge through his body, and was knocked to the floor by an unknown assailant. The incident occurred in the town of Chorley, in northern England's Lancashire County, on Friday.

"This seemed to be going on forever ... I was convinced I was being murdered in plain sight," the 61-year-old told Sky News television. "He (the officer) jumped on the small of my back with his knees ... wrenched my arms up my back and cuffed me so tightly I was in great pain." Farmer told the BBC he was shouting: "I'm blind! I'm blind!"

Lancashire Police Chief Stuart Williams said police brought the victim to a local hospital to be checked out after they realized they had used the weapon against the wrong man.

He said in a statement that police "deeply regret" the incident, which happened after police received multiple reports that a man was walking through Chorley "armed with a samurai sword."

Williams said that an urgent investigation had been launched into the incident and that the matter would also be reviewed by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, Britain's police watchdog agency.

Police said a different man was arrested in connection with the sword reports, but was released without charge.

Britain's tough weapons laws severely restrict the possession of blades, knives and knuckle dusters.

Children with ADHD find medication frees them to choose between right and wrong, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? Children living with ADHD tend to feel they benefit from medication to treat the condition and do not think the medication turns them into 'robots', according to a report published October 17. In fact, they report that medication helps them to control their behaviour and make better decisions. The study, which gives a voice to the children themselves, provides valuable insights into their experiences and the stigma they face.

The ADHD VOICES -- Voices on Identity, Childhood, Ethics and Stimulants -- study has worked with 151 families in the UK and the USA to examine ethical and societal issues surrounding attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), particularly the use of treatments such as methylphenidate (Ritalin). The project has been led by biomedical ethicist Dr Ilina Singh from King's College London and was funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Dr Singh and colleagues interviewed children and their families about ADHD, behaviour, medication and identity across four contexts: home, school, the doctor's office and peer groups.

The report is intended not only to highlight ethical and social issues surrounding ADHD but also to help families, doctors, teachers and the children themselves to understand from a child's perspective what it is like to live with ADHD.

"ADHD is a very emotive subject, which inspires passionate debate. Everyone seems to have an opinion about the condition, what causes it, and how to deal with children with ADHD, but the voices of these children are rarely listened to," explains Dr Singh. "Who better to tell us what ADHD is like and how medication affects them than the children themselves?"

Dr Singh points out the controversies that surround providing medication to children with ADHD, which some people argue turns the children into 'robots'. She believes that in many cases and with a correct diagnosis, treatment using stimulants is appropriate and beneficial, particularly if it is complemented by other interventions. The evidence from the children she interviewed suggests that they think medication improves their ability to make their own moral choices.

Glenn (age 10), from the USA, says: "If you're driving in a car, and there's two different ways, and you usually always go this way?and then one day you want to go the other way, but?the ADHD acts as a blocker, so you can't.

"[The medicine] opens the blocker so that you can go [the right] way. But you still have the choice of going the wrong way? It's harder [without medication], that's what's the truth. But it's not like [on medication] you're a robot."

Dr Singh also found that children often did not understand their condition or why they were receiving medication, and many children in the study reported that they had little meaningful contact with their doctors. After the initial evaluation, clinic visits tended to focus on side-effect checks, during which children were weighed and measured. Most children were not asked any questions during these visits.

Roger (age 13), from the UK, says: "I've only just started going to the ADHD clinic, but I haven't actually been to it properly. I've seen the doctor and he's talked about [ADHD] and I get weighed. But...they'll just say parts of what it is but then they'll stop, so they will only say some of it and then change the subject."

Dr Singh argues that children need to be better informed and able to discuss their condition. "Given the ethical concerns that arise from ADHD diagnosis and stimulant drug treatment, it is imperative that children are able to openly discuss the value of diagnosis and different treatments with a trusted professional."

The report concludes with a series of recommendations for how parents, doctors and teachers can help children cope with and better understand the condition, and begin to tackle the stigma that currently exists around it.

Professor Peter Hill, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, says: "We hope that the VOICES Study and the ADHD and Me animations will inspire people to think differently about ADHD, drug treatments and children with behavioural difficulties.

"Behaving differently around these children is the main challenge. We hope that the strategies we have outlined will help improve the interactions with these children and help improve their lives."

Clare Matterson, Director of Medical Humanities and Engagement at the Wellcome Trust, comments: "It is refreshing to hear the voices of children included in the debate about ADHD.

"It is a very emotive subject and despite the fact that these children are at the centre of this debate, they are too often ignored. This report sends a clear message to doctors, teachers and parents about the importance of talking to children about their condition -- and more importantly, listening to what they have to say."

Thunder e1350325450880 300x265 National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: 12 Tips from Experts on Adopting Dogs

October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has great, expert tips to help ensure that your dog adoption is as easy as possible for your family, and your new pooch.

All the adorable dogs featured in this article are actually available for adoption at the ASPCA?s adoption center in New York City. You can also?check here to find adoption centers closer to you!?Every dog from the ASPCA is microchipped, up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed or neutered. Adopters also receive a free follow-up veterinary exam at the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital.

If you?re thinking about adopting a dog, take a look at these great tips! And if you?re in the New York City area, consider bringing one of these sweet dogs into your home.

  • thumbs lady National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: 12 Tips from Experts on Adopting Dogs

    Take your time.

Adopting a dog is a big decision and an even bigger commitment. The ASPCA recommends asking yourself whether your family is ready for this commitment, and whether you're ready to pet-proof your home. You also need to be able to afford to care for your pet's health and safety.

Lady is a seven-year-old white American Pit Bull Terrier mix. Find out more about Lady at the ASPCA's website here!

  • thumbs cagney National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: 12 Tips from Experts on Adopting Dogs

Think about what age dog makes the most sense for your family.

If there are young kids in the house, a puppy may not be your your best bet, says the ASPCA. Instead, try a medium-sized dog over five months of age.

Cagney is an 11-month old Plott Hound/Labrador Retriever with brindle coloring. Find out more about Cagney at the ASPCA's website here!

  • thumbs snowball National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: 12 Tips from Experts on Adopting Dogs

    Consider adopting an older dog.

Parents especially should give serious consideration to adopting an older dog. Often, they're already house-broken and won't need quite the intense level of supervision that a puppy does. Also, older dogs in shelters are often the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized. When you adopt an older dog, you're saving its life.

Snowball is an eight-year-old West Highland White Terrier mix. Find out more about Snowball at the ASPCA's website here!

  • thumbs hennessy National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: 12 Tips from Experts on Adopting Dogs

Think about what type of dog will suit your personality.

Do you want a dog that's more playful, or more snuggly? Do you want a dog that will go for runs with you, or one that is content to be a couch potato most of the time? Do your research on different types of breeds, and consider that older dogs may be more mellow than puppies.

Hennessy is an eight-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier mix, who takes medication. Find out more about Hennessy at the ASPCA's website here!

  • thumbs cammy National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: 12 Tips from Experts on Adopting Dogs

    Pet-proof your home.

Making your home safe for a dog is similar to making a home safe for a toddler: tuck electrical cords out of the way, and install safety latches in lower kitchen cabinets. Make sure any house plants are out of reach and aren't poisonous. Make sure items that are dangerous to ingest?like children?s toys and chemicals?are off floor level. The ASPCA says that many people find it helps to get down on the floor for a dog?s-eye view of every room to see what might tempt a curious canine.

  • thumbs julie National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: 12 Tips from Experts on Adopting Dogs

    Decide on house rules.

Before you bring your dog home, decide whether or not she will be allowed on furniture, whether she'll ever be allowed "people" food, and where she'll be allowed to sleep. Talk with your family about what behaviors are encouraged, and which are forbidden. Consistency is the key to training dogs, says the ASPCA, so make sure everyone will stick to enforcing the new system.

  • thumbs genewilder National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: 12 Tips from Experts on Adopting Dogs

    Decide on responsibilities.

Also before you bring the dog home, decide who will be responsible for different care responsibilities, such as feeding, walking, brushing, and cleaning up after the dog. Especially if kids are going to participate, make it very clear ahead of time, and consider a chore chart. And remember, as the adult, you'll need to check up on even the most responsible kids to make sure the jobs are getting done.

Gene Wilder is a seven-year-old grey/brown miniature poodle. Find out more about Gene Wilder at the ASPCA's website here!

  • thumbs petunia National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: 12 Tips from Experts on Adopting Dogs

Find a great vet, and make an appointment.

If you don?t already have one, find a good veterinarian?and bring your new dog to a caring veterinarian for a wellness exam within one week after adoption, recommends the ASPCA. Make this first appointment even before you bring home your new pup.

    Be well-informed.

Especially if you're new to dog ownership, read up on how to care for your particular breed of dog. Check your local library for books, or view tons of guides on the ASPCA's website.

Shazam is a four-year-old brown and white Cairn Terrier mix. Find out more about Shazam at the ASPCA's website here!

  • thumbs tommmy National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: 12 Tips from Experts on Adopting Dogs

    Stock up on supplies.

Your dog doesn't need too much fancy stuff -- the right food, clean water, and some toys are really all she needs. It's recommended that you keep your dog on whatever food she's already eating, at least initially. When you take her for her first vet appointment, talk to the vet about the right food--and the right amount of food--for your individual dog.

Tip: Worried a new dog will chew all your stuff? Provide plenty of "legal" things for your dog to chew, suggests the ASPCA. If he has attractive toys and bones of his own, he?ll be much less likely to gnaw on your things!

Tommy is a three-year-old black and white Pit Bull Terrier. Find out more about Tommy at the ASPCA's website here!

    Make it legal!

Be sure to find out about your community?s dog licensing rules and apply for a license. This information can usually be found by visiting your state?s department of agriculture website, or your township's website. You can also ask your local shelter for information about the rules.

Hyundai to wire cars with Broadcom ethernet tech, put infotainment and security systems on one network

Cars wired with ethernet may conjure thoughts of roving internet hotspots, but that's not what Hyundai and Broadcom have in mind in this case. Traditionally, infotainment consoles, safety systems and the like are built on multiple in-car networks, but the duo will rig vehicles with modified ethernet cables to unify some of the disparate systems on a single network. Dubbed BroadR-Reach, the tech uses a single pair of unshielded wires to offer 100Mbps connection speeds and could scale up to 1Gbps. Though Hyundai and other automakers joined with Broadcom's standards group for the technology last year, the firm is now the second car manufacturer to pledge that its autos will get the tech. As of now, there's still no word on which models will be lined with ethernet or when they'll roll off assembly lines.

Obama camp predicts feistier debate showing

President Barack Obama at a recent grass-roots event in Miami (Vallery Jean/Getty)After President Barack Obama's painfully lackluster showing in his first debate with GOP challenger Mitt Romney, a journalist traveling with the Democrat joked to other reporters that he could explain what had happened: "The trouble with doing your debate prep in Vegas is that it stays in Vegas."

Whatever the reason, Romney's victory?in front of a TV audience of 67 million?revived his campaign and appears to have fed a public-opinion poll boost (see below) with barely three weeks left until Election Day. Not surprisingly, Obama and his campaign advisers are serving notice that he won't make the same mistake twice when he faces off with his rival on Tuesday night at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., for a town hall-style debate.

Last week, the president told ABC's Diane Sawyer that he was "determined" to do a better job of challenging Romney. And he told radio host Tom Joyner that he had been "too polite" in the first debate. "We're going to take it to him," the president promised.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki, who had joked before the first debate that the worst outcome would be that the president "could fall off the stage," set the stage for a fight on Tuesday.

"The American people should expect to see a much more energized President Obama making a passionate case for why he is a better choice for the middle class," she wrote in an email.? "And he will continue to hold Mitt Romney's feet to the fire on the facts about his policies."

Vice President Joe Biden's combative performance against Congressman Paul Ryan last week in their only debate appears to have reassured core Democrats dispirited by the president's limp outing. And now, the president,?hunkered down at?the luxurious Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va., is showing the spirit he seemed to lack the first time around.

"How is debate prep going?" a reporter called out to the president as he made a brief visit on Sunday to a nearby campaign field office. "It's going great!" Obama replied. Asked roughly the same question during his Vegas sojourn, Obama?had joked: "It's a drag. They're making me do my homework."

In addition to punching up the president's answers, aides are (still) trying to get him to shed his frequently professorial demeanor in favor of shorter responses that do a better job of connecting with voters.

(Pool reporter Helene Cooper of the New York Times notes that Obama is revving up his engine for the debate while the resort also hosts "Ferraris on the James"?with at least 11 of the iconic Italian sports cars on the grounds. Democratic Sen. John Kerry, who plays Romney in mock debates, and senior Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod have been spotted as well, Cooper says.)

On Sunday, Obama began debate prep around 10 a.m., reading briefing books and practicing for Tuesday's session, which will feature questions from actual voters?not from a mainstream media moderator who might more safely be brushed off.

The president's prep team is much the same, except for the addition of Ben Rhodes, who as deputy national security adviser for strategic communications is helping to prepare the president for foreign policy questions. (Rhodes might do well to help his boss have clear, precise answers to questions about the Sept. 11?terrorist attack on the American compound in Benghazi, Libya, for example.)

In her email, Psaki also wrote that "Gov. Romney has been making pitches all of his life, and he knows how to say what people want to hear whether that was during his time at Bain or during the dozens of town halls he did during the primary."

Tellingly, Bain Capital?the private equity firm Romney headed?never came up in the first debate, despite having been the subject of a months-long assault from the Obama campaign.

Psaki also twice underlined that Obama would highlight Romney's pro-life stance, citing the former Massachusetts governor's "belief that women should not be able to make choices about their own health care" and charging that running mate Ryan had left "women worried about their ability to make choices about their own health care."

Obama has generally enjoyed a broad "gender gap" advantage over Romney?but that edge has appeared to narrow since the first debate.

The Republican Party is expecting Romney to debate a more confrontational Obama. GOP Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, who has been playing Obama in Romney's debate prep, told ABC News on Sunday that?"President Obama is going to?come out swinging. I think he's going to have to compensate for a poor first debate."

A day before the debate, a new Washington Post/ABC News poll found just one in eight respondents saying they could still be won over. Enthusiasm for Romney has ticked up. And just 42 percent of those surveyed said the country is heading in the right direction. Fifty-one percent disapproved of Obama's handling of the economy?the foremost question on voters' minds?but still gave the president a narrow edge over his rival on whom they trust on the issue.

Craig Cotton Replaces Stefan Lepionka As Charlie's... | Stuff.co.nz

Craig Cotton steps up to lead Charlie's as co-founder Stefan Lepionka departs after bedding-in the company?s transition to Asahi ownership.

Cotton joins Charlie's from a 17-year career with Coca-Cola Amatil NZ most recently as national sales manager, non-grocery.

"It's an exciting time to be joining Charlie's," Cotton said. "Our beverage brands are recognised and enjoyed by consumers and there is great opportunity for growth through innovation and market expansion."

"Not many New Zealand companies enjoy the opportunities we do. We have local and offshore manufacturing facilities, the best brands in our categories and are now owned by Asahi who are keen to invest for growth".

"We will continue to keep the business deeply rooted in its 'Kiwi-ness'. Charlie's was born in New Zealand and is managed and run from here. That is important to us and we will not be turning our backs on our heritage."

Lepionka co-founded the juice company with childhood friend Marc Ellis in 1999. It was bought by global brewing giant Asahi in August last year.

Improve your Home Air Quality with Gillece Indoor Air Quality Services

Indoor air pollution could be affecting you and your family?s health and wellbeing, especially if you or someone in your household suffers from allergies or asthma. Airborne contaminants can pollute the air in our homes, contributing to respiratory symptoms, illness, and even disease. It is estimated that indoor air is significantly more polluted than the air outdoors, which is bad enough on its own. Fortunately, Gillece Indoor Air Quality Services can help clean up your indoor air to improve your home air quality.

Air pollution in our homes can exist in the form of allergenic particulates, infectious agents, and toxic compounds. Some common types of these pollutants are: dust, pollen, and mold, bacteria and viruses, and pesticides. Particles 5 microns or less in size are considered to be inhalation hazards, while those 2.5 microns or less are classified as Respirable Suspended Particles (RSPs). Because RSPs are small enough to invade the lungs, they can potentially cause serious health problems and affect allergy and asthma symptoms. And it is estimated that 98% of all airborne contaminants are actually 1 micron or less! Gillece Indoor Air Quality Services provides and installs IAQ products that work to capture and neutralize these pollutants for overall better home air quality.

Gillece Services provides air filtration systems that work with your home?s furnace to collect the smallest of airborne particles that are the most harmful to breathe. Household factors can affect indoor air pollution and make it worse, for example: if you have one or more pets living indoors; if someone smokes inside your home; and if you often use chemical products and solvents such as cleaners, air fresheners, and hairspray. Air filtration systems provided by Gillece consist of one or more filter pads that magnetize particles in order to capture them and purify the air to the highest degree. Other products include systems that use ultraviolet light to kill or damage hazardous microorganisms. When it comes to your home air quality, Gillece has the right type of product for you and your family?s needs.

To protect your family from potentially harmful indoor air pollution and to improve air quality throughout your home, consider an Indoor Air Quality product from Gillece. You can breathe easier, feel safer, and live in a better environment overall. Because most of us spend the majority of our time at home, it is even more important to have the best air quality possible. With Gillece Indoor Air Quality Services, improved home air quality can be an option.

Gillece Services for Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, Electrical, Waterproofing, Water Quality, and Indoor Quality is there for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week- nights, weekends, and holidays! We provide emergency, maintenance, and replacement services to Pittsburgh and surrounding counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington, and Westmoreland. HBT: Werth's HR caps tense, thrilling Game 4

We?re going to have yet another Game 5 in this already thrilling postseason.

Jayson Werth clubbed a walkoff solo homer to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning this evening to power the Nationals to a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals in Game 4 of the NLDS. It forces a fifth and deciding game in the series tomorrow night in Washington, D.C.

The home run came on the 14th pitch of an intense duel with Lance Lynn where Werth battled back from 0-2 and fouled off a number of tough pitches. But he eventually found a pitch to his liking and put it over the left field fence and into the bullpen for the first playoff win in Washington, D.C. since 1933.

Ross Detwiler allowed an unearned run over six six innings before Jordan Zimmermann, Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen combined for three innings of shutout relief. Eight of the nine outs recorded by the trio were via the strikeout, though they did get some help from a very questionable strike zone from home plate umpire Jim Joyce. Pete Kozma drew a walk with two outs in the top of the ninth and likely would have scored on a bloop into shallow left field off the bat of Matt Carpenter, but Ian Desmond was able to chase it down while making an impressive over-the-shoulder catch.

Kyle Lohse was very solid in a no-decision, allowing just one run on two hits and walk over 7 2/3 innings. His only mistake was a solo home run by Adam LaRoche in the second inning, but he simply didn?t get enough help from his offense on this day.

We?ll get a rematch from Game 1 tomorrow night, as Adam Wainwright will get the call for the Cardinals and Gio Gonzalez will pitch for the Nationals.

E-Commerce Delivery Startup Shutl Lands Another $3.2M In Run-Up To U.S. Launch

Screen Shot 2012-10-11 at 12.07.48 AMShutl, the London-based startup that promises to enable the delivery of online purchases within minutes of sale, has secured $3.2 million in funding that it plans to put toward its upcoming debut in North America. The new money was brought in by Shutl’s existing investors, which include UPS’s strategic venture arm and Hummingbird Ventures, along with the participation of two new backers, e.ventures and Notion Capital. Shutl’s last bit of funding was the $2 million raise it announced in August, which was also provisioned to be put toward the impending North American launch. Over the past year, Shutl has expanded across the UK, where it says it can enable the delivery of goods purchased online either within minutes of them being purchased or inside a 1-hour window selected by the shopper. It does this with its web platform, which connects retailers to local same-day courier companies. The company claims its fastest delivery clocks in at just under 15 minutes from time of purchase. This apparently is good not only for the consumer, but also for Shutl — since it first came on the scene back in late 2009, the company has liked to compare its service to “Kozmo meets UrbanFetch, but with a profit made on every delivery.” Shutl says it plans to launch stateside in the first quarter of 2013, starting with New York and San Francisco. After that, Shutl will commence “phase two” of its North American rollout which will include the likes of Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, and Washington, along with Canadian cities Montreal and Toronto. Coming to the U.S. is a big goal for Shutl, founder and CEO Tom Allason told TechCrunch’s Mike Butcher earlier this year. “We are ready for the U.S., a market that we estimate will be worth around $26 billion by 2016,” he said then. To address a market that large will take some strength — and, of course, there are already some US-based startups such as Postmates and TaskRabbit who are hustling hard to tackle the ultra-quick delivery space — so it makes sense for Shutl to take advantage of the chance to pad its coffers with a bit more cash before it crosses the pond.

Internet Marketing Rules Blog: Little-Known Gems Of Internet ...

If you?re still struggling to make money on the internet with your internet business, then now is the time to re-evaluate your marketing plan. The bottom line is that you need a good offer, a good sales letter (or product description page), and alot of targeted traffic. With these 3 things intact, you can?t go wrong.

However, many online business owners go wrong. They do so because they follow the outdated and ineffective strategies of marketing, and then go out expecting to earn alot of money in the process. But it just won?t happen in this day and age. If you want to have the success that you?re looking for in your business, then you will have to change what you?re doing, and start doing things that will make your online business productive.

Even if you?re currently getting a little bit of traffic to your website, you could always run ads to boost your traffic count, but as soon as the advertising funds run out, so does your traffic. So if you?re going to do advertising, make sure you?re making money - or at least breaking even on each sale.

Also, there are times where you CAN lose money on each customer you get, and wind up extremely profitable in the years to come. If you know what the average lifetime value of a customer in your business is, then you can probably afford to go negative by a small amount on each sale, because you know you will recoup that money (and more) as you sell more and more to your backend customers.

However if you?re brand new with your internet business and you don?t have any customers yet, then you have no clue as to how much each customer will be worth to you in the long run. Because of this, you?re better off trying to make money on each sale, or at least breaking even. Don?t try to go negative on each sale because you don?t know whether or not your customers will be worth anything to you in the future.

In the world of online marketing, this has to be your thinking process. You can?t just buy a website, create a product, and start marketing. All of these things need to be taken cared of before you start doing any marketing. Create a ?marketing plan? (not a business plan) that will guide you as you market your products online.

Becoming a ?marketer? versus just being good at what you do will take your business over the top. It?s very important to be a marketer first, then be a business owner. Marketers produce sales; business owners produce products and do customer service. If you want to maximize your sales and profits, this is what you have to do.

Use today?s lesson as a guide to keep in mind as you market your online business. You don?t want to be in the 95% of new business owners who will fail this year. If you want to be amongst the top 5%, successful group? you have to be aggressive and smart with your marketing.

Good luck with using these tips to earn more money in your online business today.

Costa Concordia cruise ship captain says sacking unfair

12 hrs.

ROME (Reuters) - The captain of the Costa Concordia which ran into a rock and capsized off the Italian coast in January, killing up to 32 people, has sued for wrongful dismissal, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

Italian Francesco Schettino was not only fired by Costa Cruises but is accused by prosecutors of causing the accident by sailing the luxury cruise liner too close to shore.

He faces charges of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship and preliminary hearings will begin on Oct. 15.

"It is the right of every worker to appeal against his dismissal and Captain Schettino has done no more than exercise that right," lawyer Bruno Leporatti said.

"There is nothing to contest or be amazed about, unless we want to say that what the law allows for all citizens doesn't apply for Francesco Schettino."

Schettino was held up to ridicule in Italy and abroad following the Jan. 13 disaster off the Tuscan island of Giglio and his name became a symbol of incompetence and cowardice.

The angry order to "Get back on board, damn it!" delivered by a coast guard officer to Schettino over the telephone after he had abandoned his ship was printed on T-shirts in Italy.

Investigators said Schettino brought the 290-m (950-ft)-long vessel too close to shore, delayed evacuation and lost control of the operation during which he left the sinking ship while many of the 4,200 passengers and crew were still on board.

The Naples-born captain has always acknowledged making mistakes once it became clear that the 144,400-tonne Costa Concordia was in trouble, but has said he was not the only one who should be blamed for the tragedy.

Tesla Model S squares off against BMW M5 in drag race, gives EVs extra street cred video

We already know from our own experience that the Tesla Model S is a driver's car, with acceleration and handling you wouldn't expect from a big and quiet luxury sedan. There's still nothing like a drag race to help settle the matter. Automobile has pitted the upscale EV against one of its more conspicuous rivals, BMW's M5, with performance results that might surprise those who would expect a 500HP, twin-turbo V8 to regularly come out on top. While we won't spoil the full results of the showdown video after the break, let's just say that even the M5's relatively wide torque band can only do so much when the Model S' electric motor is always at its peak. BMW's car may be better overall for those who want to travel long distances outside of certain routes, or to enjoy a burly exhaust note -- but there has to be a certain thrill for Tesla drivers who know they can hang with the speed kings while helping the environment.
