Cal Student with Brain Cancer is Running out of Health Insurance ...

A?UC Berkeley?graduate student with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer is emerging as the poster child for the intense debate around healthcare reform in the United States, says Huffington Post blogger Pamela Mays McDonald.

As the Supreme Court deliberates ?on whether to overturn? the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Berkeley native Kenya Wheeler is on the verge of losing his health insurance.

Wheeler, 38, was diagnosed with cancer last fall. In the last eight months, Wheeler has almost ?exhausted?his entire lifetime cap for treatment?under his student health insurance plan.?? He currently has ?$40,000 remaining in his account,? which will only cover about ?five more days in the hospital,? says the Huffington Post.

The article paints Wheeler as a keenly intelligent, affable man with a ?low-key positivity? that has helped him in his career as an urban planner.

After working as an urban planner in Southern California, Wheeler recently went back to school at UC Berkeley. There, he?s on a research team, working with UC Berkeley Professor Paul Waddell at the ?Institute of Urban and Regional Development at the UrbanSim.?

According to its website, UrbanSim is a ?software-based simulation system? that helps with the planning and analysis of urban development. They incorporate ?interactions between land use, transportation, the economy, and the environment.?

Wheeler is a small plane pilot who takes to the air as a hobby, the Huffington Post reports.

From Nike to Novant Health: Air Jordan ? The Healthcare Marketer

Everyone knows Michael Jordan. He has one of the best known personal brands in the world. He?s endorsed everything from Nike to Hanes underwear to Gatorade. According to a recent article in Forbes Magazine, Michael is one of the best liked athletes of our time. Here?s a quote from that story:

?Nielsen and E-Poll Market Research produce an N-Score for celebrities that measures appeal, likability and awareness. No athlete comes close to matching MJ?s stats who has an N-Score of 682, nearly 300 points higher than any other sports figure. His 71% awareness is among the highest in sports (only Tiger Woods, OJ Simpson and Mike Tyson rank higher and not necessarily for the right reasons). His personality attributes score off the charts and he rates as being liked by 93% of people surveyed. Compare that to LeBron James who 49% of respondents say they dislike.? (Forbes Magazine, September 2011)

So here?s the news (it must be official because they sent me the press release!): It was announced earlier this week that basketball legend Michael Jordan has joined 25,000 ?teammates? at Novant Health to help communicate the not-for-profit hospital system?s vision for healthcare.

Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan and Bobcats Sports & Entertainment President Fred Whitfield (left) present Charlotte Bobcats jerseys with Jordan?s signature No. 23 to Presbyterian Healthcare CEO Mark Billings (second from left) and Novant Health CEO Carl Armato.

Jordan?s NBA Charlotte Bobcats already rely on Novant?s Presbyterian Hospital as their official healthcare provider, offering care and treatment for Bobcats players and staff and supplying medical services to the millions of fans who attend events at Time Warner Cable Arena. Now, in a rare endorsement of a local organization, Jordan is expanding the relationship by agreeing to participate in television and print advertisements promoting Novant?s commitment to deliver ?the most remarkable patient experience, in every dimension, every time.?

?If you?re going to be judged by the company you keep, I know I am in remarkable company with Novant Health,? said Jordan, referring to the Winston-Salem-based company and its 13 hospitals and 355 clinic locations in North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia. Some of its anchor hospitals include Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC and Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Novant Medical Group, their physicians organization, has more than 1,100 physicians.

Using Athletes as Spokespeople for Healthcare Organizations

I know that other hospitals and health systems have found that affiliations with star athletes can have a positive impact on the organization and its programs. Tufts Medical Center has longstanding relationships with Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics and Bruins legend Cam Neely. Both have impacted Tufts dramatically through their highly visible philanthropic support. Pierce has been a supporter of Tufts Medical Center since benefiting from an innovative surgical procedure there in 2000. Since then, his involvement with Tufts has grown, leading to the creation of the Paul Pierce Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Inova Health in Virginia brought in former Redskins star Darrell Green as the spokesperson for its Fit for 50 program. That program has been incredibly successful and Darrell is a marvelous spokesperson. Fit For 50 Spring is an innovative, interactive, web-based fitness program designed to help keep people fit through the winter season. The Fit for 50 website provides regular video tips from Inova clinicians, designed to improve an individual?s fitness and lead a healthier life. The program is truly interactive, offering participants/members the opportunity to chat with doctors and fitness experts about fitness and wellness information and maintain a fitness journal or ?playbook? online.

What do you think about bringing in star athletes as spokespeople for hospitals and health systems? Will this be a growing trend as hospitals begin to put more emphasis on keeping populations healthy and preventing chronic disease? Let me know you thoughts.

Note: Unlike Michael Jordan, I have no affiliation with Novant Health. They are not a client of my firm.

Expanding Your Business With The Help Of SEO Internet Marketing ...

Expand Your Business with SEO Internet Marketing

Two of the core concepts regarding SEO marketing plans are website branding and usability, which are major factors in determining your web page ranking. The challenge for business websites is not only getting customers to visit the site, but also keeping them coming back and staying longer each time. In most cases, though, people will search and shop the internet with specific products and items in mind. Establishing connections between customers? needs and your website is where SEO marketing excels.

Regardless of the specific search engine, internet users must use specific key words to begin their search process. In turn, the search engine will produce a list of all the web pages that contain those key words. The SEO is designed to increase the likelihood of your website appearing at the top of these lists, ideally within the top ten. If a considerable amount of SEO has been done for your site, you greatly increase your presence in the search results.

Considering all that is involved to make SEO marketing really effective, it may prove to be too daunting of a task for any one person. Besides the development of key words and phrases, SEO marketing also includes many other processes, including web page indexing and analyzing, back link creation, and social networking. A SEO internet marketing operation will not produce the desired results unless there are dedicated personnel and resources to ensure its success. It may be more productive for you to hire an outside internet marketing specialist, whether this is a private contractor or a SEO marketing firm.

Non-profits and Social Media: Fundraising Campaigns Where ...

Twive and ReceiveFundraising is one of the necessary evils of the non-profit world.

In order to keep a non-profit afloat, and do the good works that you originally set out to do, you have to be funded. That requires some mix of seeking grants from the government and businesses, as well as approaching individuals to ?invest? in the work you are doing. And quite often, in this economy, it might seem as though you spend more time trying to raise funds, than you do on your actual social mission.

In his wonderful new book, The Non-Profit Narrative (which I?ll be reviewing very soon), Dan Portnoy notes:

Non-profit organizations weren?t started to consistently ask for money and talk about the troubles of keeping the lights on. Remember, they were started to change the world.

And yet, if you work at a non-profit organization, you may feel like you always have your hand out. And that might actually be the perception that many have of your organization. But what if you just took the time to maximize your fundraising efforts, so that you could generate more money with each ask, and therefore, not have to ask so often? Wouldn?t that be a wonderful thing? It?s no fun asking for money.

Unless you?re creative. And have the right tools at your disposal.

Enter Razoo Giving, an online social giving platform. My friend Ifdy Perez, a champion of social good, and the Community Manager at Razoo, which I believe is the most robust social giving platform[, sent me a DM on Twitter yesterday telling me about their new project: Twive and Receive. When I checked it out, I knew I not only had to write this post about it, but I also signed up. But more on that later?

Twive and Receive is a 24-hour online giving competition scheduled for June 14th. Folks like you and me will represent our communities on Twitter and other social platforms to raise money for our favorite local non-profit, while at the same time competing to help them win a share of $30,000.

Razoo has hosted one-day events like this before, but usually on a more hyper-local or regional level. For instance, ?Give to the Max Day? back in November in Washington, D.C. raised more than $2-million in just one day for over a thousand local non-profits. Pretty impressive, eh?

Here?s what I like about this particular campaign:

1) It?s social ? At the heart of this campaign is Twitter, but other platforms like Facebook, Pinterest, and even blogging will be used to raise awareness during this 24-hour period. While one or two people in each community will be heading up the effort, they?ll be using their online social influence to get others on board.

2) It fosters community ? The large majority of the campaign will be done online, but there can be offline elements as well. And you and other locals can band together online, and even gather together offline, to rally the troops and raise awareness and funds for your cause. Nothing brings people together better than a shared cause that benefits your local community.

3) It?s short ? Many high profile fundraisers seem to go on forever. And ever. This is limited to 24-hours. In. Out. It?s Over.

4) It?s competitive ? Gamification is one of the buzzwords of the social realm these days. Foursquare and other platforms use gamification to get people involved and keep them involved. Who doesn?t love a little friendly competition? It?s you and your city against a host of other cities, seeing who can raise the most money. Community pride can be a powerful motivating factor.

5) It?s fun ? Or, it CAN be fun. It?s all how you execute. But when?s the last time you enjoyed fundraising? Usually we dread the task of asking others for money. Here, you can have some fun and raise money at the same time.

6) It fosters and rewards creativity ? I have no idea how this campaign will shake out, but I?m convinced of one thing: the cities that win will be the ones that exhibit the most creativity. If all you do is tweet about raising money, you can only go so far. But what if you get local businesses and media involved? Are there offline methods you can use to get people involved online? What about a tweetup for happy hour? There are so many things

7) It fosters relationships between the community and the non-profit ? If you do this right, your non-profit will be on board, and they?ll be promoting it as well. You?ll have the chance to connect local folks to the non-profit, who might never have engaged with them in the past. And it feels good to give something back to your community as an individual. At the same time, the non-profit benefits by rolling up their sleeves and working alongside community members.

8) Razoo will help you along the way ? This isn?t some promotion or contest where you?re told to do something, and then the organizing business disappears until the last day. Razoo will be putting together an online toolkit to help you plan your day, including widgets you can put on websites and Facebook pages. They?ll also be hosting weekly conference calls to bring you up to date on the campaign, and offer you tips.

9) Everyone wins ? You win by being a part of something good in your community, and you?ll get to meet and build relationships with others. Your non-profit wins, because even if they don?t ?win? the competition, they still get to keep the money that was raised for them. Plus they?ll most likely have access to new donors. And Razoo wins because they are the organizers of this, and many non-profits will be introduced to their great platform.

I?ve already signed up to be the point person for my community in Lancaster, and I?ve chosen the non-profit for which we?ll be fundraising: Water Street Ministries (client) which provides a variety of services to the homeless and needy in our area. They serve a lot of people and do great work.

What about you? Are you willing to step up and be the point person for your community? If there is no one representing your city, why not consider signing up now? And if your city is already spoken for, join the cause! Contact the person listed next to your city and offer to lend a hand, or a tweet.

What do you think are the hallmarks or elements of a successful online fundraising campaign? What has worked for you in the past? How can you incorporate these elements into your fundraising efforts all year long?

Plastic restraints failed to hold pilot, JetBlue CEO vows review

JetBlue CEO says he knew the pilot who become erratic on flight 191 to Las Vegas personally. But JetBlue promises a review of safety procedures.

The CEO of JetBlue said on Wednesday he personally knows the pilot whose erratic behavior led to a diverted flight and that there were no earlier signs of problems, although the airline will review its procedures after the incident.

A JetBlue flight bound for Las Vegas from New York had to make an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas on Tuesday after what passengers described as chaos mid-flight when Captain Clayton Osbon was locked out of the cockpit.

Aviation experts say that such incidents are rare. John Cox, an aviation safety consultant and former airline pilot, told the Associated Press that incidents in which pilots become mentally incapacitated during a flight are "pretty rare." He said he could only recall two or three other examples in the more than 40 years he has been following commercial aviation.

RELATED: Four things that bug flight attendants

Passenger video of the situation shows Osbon ranting about Israel and Iran, among other things.

JetBlue CEO Dave Barger described it as a medical situation that turned into a security one. He said he did not think anyone from the company has since talked to Osbon.

"The captain's now in the hands of medical care, obviously, under the custody of the FBI," Barger said told NBC's "Today" program.

"I've known the captain personally for a long period of time and there's been no indication of this at all," Barger said, adding that the pilot was a "consummate professional."

Barger said, "We'll always take a look at procedures ... but I'm very confident about our procedures, the industry's procedures."

He credited the training of another pilot and other cabin crew staff in handling the situation on the flight which had 135 passengers.

Passengers described a chaotic mid-flight scene in which a man in a JetBlue uniform, apparently locked out of the cockpit, began banging on the door and demanding to be let inside.

Tony Antolino, a passenger on the flight who helped subdue the pilot, said the plastic restraints on board were flimsy and systematically failed. Passengers on the flight were rattled, and several had to restrain the pilot after his meltdown by sitting on him.

"They did not work, they failed," Antolino told NBC, speaking from Las Vegas. "We had to use seatbelt extenders, people's belts and physically our hands to try and restrain the guy."

Asked if he would review company procedures following the incident, Barger said: "Absolutely, but not just that, but also the entire event ... within JetBlue and also the industry."

The Federal Aviation Administration cited an "onboard medical emergency" as the reason for the diversion, and said preliminary information showed the co-pilot became concerned that the captain had "exhibited erratic behavior during the flight."

"The captain had exited the cockpit during the flight, after which the co-pilot locked the door," the statement said. "When the captain attempted to enter the locked cockpit,he was subdued by passengers."

The incident was the second one involving erratic behavior by a JetBlue crew member since August 2010, when a flight attendant, Steve Slater, bolted from a plane by deploying and sliding down the inflatable emergency chute following an altercation with a passenger.

John Cox, an aviation safety consultant and former airline pilot, told the Associated Press that incidents in which pilots become mentally incapacitated during a flight are "pretty rare." He said he could only recall two or three other examples in the more than 40 years he has been following commercial aviation.

Samsung launches 'store within a store' at leading Phones4U branch

Samsung

Remember that thing Samsung was meant to be doing at Phones4U on Oxford Street, London on March 30? Shockingly, it turns out it's not a Galaxy S III launch event, but instead the opening of a store within a store at the leading branch. What this means, according to Samsung, is that a large portion of the store will be dedicated to all things Samsung, with the latest phones and tablets on show, and "play areas" for prospective customers to try them out.

Samsung already operates "Samsung Digital Plaza" locations in South Korea, but this is the first we've heard of the manufacturer getting more involved in the retail world outside of its home turf. We're not expecting any new products to show up at Phones4U tomorrow. But the store's prime location in central London, combined with the new Samsung partnership, may make it an ideal spot for showing off upcoming Samsung phones in the future

We've got Samsung's press release after the break.

New insights into how cells duplicate their DNA

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? In the beginning ... but how do you begin? That question has long perplexed scientists in fields from cosmology to anthropology. Fortunately, researchers at the Office of Science's Brookhaven National Lab (Brookhaven Lab) are beginning to get at the answer on a small but important scale -- in biology.

Specifically, the researchers looked at how cells begin to duplicate their DNA, so they can then begin to replicate themselves. DNA is the essential stuff of beginnings. Its double strands -- which consist of chemical 'letters' or base pairs -- tell cells how to remake themselves; how to build the protein machines that keep them alive and make them distinct. So before they divide, cells have to duplicate their DNA.

This is a relatively straightforward affair for bacteria (and other simple cells, also called prokaryotes) since they typically only have a single loop of DNA, even though it can be millions of base pairs long. As a consequence, they have just a single point along the strand where the copying starts, called an origin of replication.

However, most of biology that can be seen with the naked eye -- animals and plants and even humble yeast -- is composed of more complicated cells called eukaryotes. Eukaryotes have much more DNA, which is tightly wound into distinct pieces, or spindles, called chromosomes, each of which may have many origins of replication. 'Top gun' cells, say those in humans, have a need for speed, since they have some 3.4 billion DNA base pairs, all of which have to be pulled apart and copied. So in order to finish in a reasonable amount of time, those cells have to begin copying their DNA simultaneously at tens of thousands of different points.

But how do they begin? Namely, how do protein machines find and bind to the right spots along the DNA strands, and then set them up for copying? That's what the team at Brookhaven Lab studied. They used an imaging method known as cryo-electron microscopy to take extremely high resolution images of how the right proteins come together at the right point on the DNA strands, forming a structure called an "origin recognition complex" (ORC). The lab's first-of-a-kind images (taken using yeast cells, which are also eukaryotes), showed how the shape of the complex changes as it sets the DNA up for duplication.

Scientists then gathered additional details about individual parts of the structure from previously made X-ray crystallography images, which showed the positions of many individual portions of the complex. Then they took all of their information and ran a detailed computer simulation, which gave scientists a good idea of how the whole process works.

That's important since beginnings can go bad, and uncontrolled cell division is the hallmark of many cancers. The new insights from Brookhaven Lab might lead to new ways to attack cancers at a basic level, one reason that the research was also supported by the National Institutes of Health.

But there's also a deeper reason to do basic research. Beginnings are one of the most precious opportunities of all, the chance to create, to discover. That's what happens with each new experiment run at National Laboratories supported by the Office of Science: Each day it's a new chance to begin again?in the beginning.

Lindsay Lohan to Guest Star on Glee!

Undeterred by her legal woes and recent mediocre performance on Saturday Night Live, Glee has been diagnosed with a serious case of ... LINDSANITY!

Sorry. Some things just never get old.

The hit Fox series is in final negotiations with Lindsay Lohan to guest star this spring in one of the current season’s final episodes, according to reports.

She'll be taking on a key role ... herself!

Lindsay Lohan on Late Night

Once source material for the show - her mom chastised Glee and Gwyneth Paltrow for cracking jokes at her expense - LiLo will serve as a celebrity judge at Nationals.

No word yet as to who will join Lohan on the panel, although we would recommend Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Kim Kardashian, with the latter getting flour-bombed.

The Glee gig will mark another step in Lindsay's comeback, which began with a Playboy spread of all things. Her last scripted TV gig was a 2008 arc (!) on Ugly Betty.

She’s also in talks to play acting legend Elizabeth Taylor in a Lifetime biopic. As for Glee, producers also recently landed Whoopi Goldberg as a big-name guest star.

Birth Control Pills Have Lasting Effects on Relationships

Using oral contraceptives may affect relationship satisfaction

Image: Ryan Lane/iStockphoto

Birth-control pills are known to affect women?s taste in men, at least in laboratory experiments. Now a study of real-world couples suggests that this pill-related preference change could have long-term consequences for a relationship?s quality and outcome.

In the lab, women using oral contraceptives show a weaker preference for masculine men?those with high testosterone levels and the corresponding physical hallmarks?than their non-pill-using counterparts. To investigate this issue in a real-world setting, psychologist S. Craig Roberts of the University of Stirling in Scotland and his collaborators gave online surveys to more than 2,500 women from various countries. According to the results, published online October 12 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, participants who used hormonal contraceptives while choosing their partner were less attracted to him and less sexually satisfied during their relationship than were individuals who did not use hormonal birth control. Pill users were happier with their mate?s financial support and other nonsexual aspects of the relationship, however, and they were less likely to separate.

This relationship stability might be caused by the bias of women on the pill toward low-testosterone men, who tend to be more faithful. Roberts suggests that women who met their mate while taking the pill might want to switch to nonhormonal contraceptives several months before getting married to test whether their feelings for their partner remain the same.

Highly flexible despite hard-wiring: Even slight stimuli change the information flow in the brain

ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2012) ? One cup or two faces? What we believe we see in one of the most famous optical illusions changes in a split second; and so does the path that the information takes in the brain. In a new theoretical study, scientists of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization, the Bernstein Center G?ttingen and the German Primate Center now show how this is possible without changing the cellular links of the network. The direction of information flow changes, depending on the time pattern of communication between brain areas. This reorganisation can be triggered even by a slight stimulus, such as a scent or sound, at the right time.

The way that the different regions of the brain are connected with each other plays a significant role for information processing. This processing can be changed by the assembling and disassembling of nerve fibres joining distant brain circuits. But such events are much too slow to explain rapid changes in perception. From experimental studies it was known that the responsible actions must be at least two orders of magnitude faster. The G?ttingen scientists now show for the first time that it is possible to change the information flow in a tightly interconnected network in a simple manner.

Many areas of the brain display a rhythmic nerve cell activity. "The interacting brain areas are like metronomes that tick at the same speed and in a distinct temporal pattern," says the physicist and principal investigator Demian Battaglia. The researchers were now able to demonstrate that this temporal pattern determines the information flow. "If one of the metronomes is affected, e.g. through an external stimulus, then it changes beat, ticking in an altered temporal pattern compared to the others. The other areas adapt to this new situation through self-organisation and start playing a different drum beat as well. It is therefore sufficient to impact one of the areas in the network to completely reorganize its functioning, as we have shown in our model," explains Battaglia.

The applied perturbation does not have to be particularly strong. "It is more important that the 'kick' occurs at exactly the right time of the rhythm," says Battaglia. This might play a significant role for perception processes: "When viewing a picture, we are trained to recognize faces as quickly as possible -- even if there aren't any," points out the G?ttingen researcher. "But if we smell a fragrance reminiscent of wine, we immediately see the cup in the picture. This allows us to quickly adjust to things that we did not expect, changing the focus of our attention."

Next, the scientists want to test the model on networks with a more realistic anatomy. They also hope that the findings inspire future experimental studies, as Battaglia says: "It would be fantastic if, in some years, certain brain areas could be stimulated so finely and precisely that the theoretically predicted effects can be measured through imaging methods."

Leader of Mali military coup received US training

The leader of the military coup that toppled the democratic government of the West African nation of Mali this week underwent basic officer training in the United States, the Obama administration acknowledged Friday.

Capt. Amadou Sanoga, who is the apparent leader of the group of junior officers that toppled the government of President Amadou Toumani Toure, "participated in several U.S.-funded International Military Education and Training (IMET) programs in the United States, including basic officer training," the U.S. military's Africa Command said in an email to McClatchy Newspapers.

The State Department confirmed Sanoga's U.S. connection in a separate email.

It was not immediately known which training courses Sanoga had participated in. The IMET programs can include a wide range of activities, including human rights training and study at one of the U.S. military's war colleges.

Whether U.S. officials have been in touch with Sanoga, who declared himself the head of the National Committee for the Restoration of Democracy and the State, since the coup also was unknown. In an email, State Department African affairs spokeswoman Hilary Renner said only that U.S. diplomats in Mali's capital, Bamako, are "seeking to contact the mutiny leaders to express the U.S. and international position that the civilian elected government must be fully restored without delay."

Sanoga's U.S. ties complicate what was already an inconvenient development in the regional counterterrorism strategy for the United States, which now will have to decide how to deal with a military junta that it has vowed to reject in a country that is a significant front in the war against terror.

"At this moment the United States is pausing any planned military equipment or training programs to the Malian military," Renner wrote. "We remain committed to building the long-term counterterrorism capacities of our partners in the region, including Mali. The restoration of a strong constitutional process and good governance at all levels is a critical priority for counterterrorism efforts."

The whereabouts of President Toure remain unknown, though Renner said "we have seen reports" that the president is safe. She urged the coup leaders to protect the "well-being" of all those they had detained.

Sanoga and his fellow officers have moved quickly to consolidate power. Unless they face a backlash among their military peers or a regional effort to unseat them, the international community might have no choice but to deal with the young new rulers, like it or not, analysts said.

"Mali is what many consider the poster child for democracy in West Africa. It is also an aid darling. What are all these donor countries going to do? It's completely unclear," said Benjamin Soares, a Mali expert at the African Studies Center in Leiden, the Netherlands.

"Of course, there is a long history of coups in the region. Western donors usually say they won't deal with these governments, but they almost always eventually do so," Soares said.

The U.S. military has supported the Mali military extensively over the past decade, and the country has become a significant partner in the U.S. efforts to curb North Africa's shadowy al-Qaida affiliate, al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM.

In addition to its involvement in the International Military Education and Training program, Mali has also participated in the Trans Sahara Counter Terrorism Partnership, which is intended to strengthen bilateral military ties with the U.S. and supports counterterrorism coordination across the region's different militaries. Mali also recently hosted U.S. soldiers in a joint logistical exercise named Atlas Accord 12.

Cash spills on the highway: What would you do?

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) ? You're cruising along the highway when you see a bunch of green bills fluttering around like flakes in a snow globe. You get closer and you realize it's cash. Other drivers are pulling over to snatch what they can. What do you do?

Some drivers in Maryland faced that choice Friday when two plastic bags containing about $5,700 in bills and coins fell from an unlatched door on an armored truck and spilled onto Interstate 270 about 35 miles northwest of Washington.

One witness said she saw about 30 cars pulled over on the shoulders and people frantically collecting fistfuls of cash. Police say the motorists grabbed almost all of it. Others kept driving.

Imagine having your commute turn into a morality play. What's your first reaction? Do you slam on the brakes, jump onto a busy highway and start scrambling? Do you slow down to get a closer look? Or do you keep driving, guilt-free but without a surprise payday? OK, now what if your kids were in the car?

The answers from several people who spoke to The Associated Press on Friday offer a glimpse into the minds of Americans trying to juggle doing the right thing and getting by in a tough economy where even a few unexpected dollars can be a blessing.

It wasn't hypothetical for attorney Heather Kelly, who was driving to her office in Frederick when she passed through the surreal scene. She didn't see the armored truck but noticed the two clear plastic bags of currency along the road and people snatching the $1 to $50 bills wafting through the air and skittering along the highway.

"It was in the traffic lanes and on the shoulders and just generally kind of like a snow globe of cash," she said. "Some people had fists full of money, fists full of dollars, and other people were just still trying to collect."

Kelly decided it was too risky to stop, though no one was injured. She said she wouldn't have stopped even if it was a two-lane road with no other traffic.

"It was really unclear what was going on and I like to stay away from that type of thing," she said.

The truck belonged to Garda World Security Services Corp., a Montreal-based security and cash logistics company, spokesman Joe Gavaghan said. He said they're cooperating with state police investigators to find out what happened.

Maryland State Police urged people to return the money to the agency's barracks in Rockville, with no questions asked and no charges filed. As of Monday afternoon, no one had.

So what would you do?

Chicago billing clerk Stephany Harris, 53, didn't miss a beat.

"Of course I would," she said. "If the armored car had been in an accident of something, I'd make sure the drivers were OK and I'd call 911. But I'd put as much money in my pockets (as I could) and run."

But what if her kids were there? "I absolutely would not take any money," she answered again without hesitation. "I wouldn't want them to get the message that grabbing money that is not yours is the right thing to do."

Jeff Bora, 30, of Chicago said he would stop to make sure none of the money was stolen.

"I'd start picking it up and I'd call police right away," he said.

As a former lawyer and prosecutor, he knows that it's stealing and he could land in serious trouble. Even if he was alone and could get away undetected, he said he still wouldn't do it: "It would be about how I would feel about myself later. Bad karma would get me in the end."

Another kind of karma occurred to Dennis Lowe, 30, of Providence, R.I. He said it's simple human nature, especially if the money is from an armored truck. He said plenty of Americans are fed up with banks, insurance companies and other corporations that move cash in armored trucks.

"The money is insured," he said while waiting downtown for a bus. "They've been taking money from me, so it's just karma."

He said he likely would have stopped to grab a few bills, but it might depend on where he was going. He planned to watch his alma mater, Xavier University, on TV in the NCAA basketball tournament on Friday night.

What if he spotted the cash on his way to catch the game? Watch his team or grab the greenbacks?

"Watch Xavier," he said. "No question."

In Southern California, where mammoth freeways and gridlock are a way of life, 19-year-old Stephen Schreiber worried about causing traffic.

"I don't want to get hit by some cars and I don't want to cause traffic," he said while working at a coffee shop in Tustin.

He did see one possibility: "What kind of car are we driving? A convertible? Because then maybe my hand or my butterfly net would just stick up and grab some as I drive on by, but otherwise I probably wouldn't stop," he said.

Anthony Janni, 36, a bartender in Hagerstown, said he understands why people would stop for "money that seems to just fall into their hands," but he probably wouldn't have done so.

"The highway's not necessarily the place to do something like that," Janni said. "It's not something worth causing an accident over."

Brian Gates, 32, of Cincinnati said he would get out to pick up the cash, with a few conditions. If he had kids and they were in the car, he wouldn't do it. He also wouldn't risk his safety.

"I'm not going to take a chance of endangering my life or others for money," he said.

If he was alone? "Oh yeah! If there is money out there. We can all use money."

The economy lurked in the decision-making for Gates and others.

Gates believes it's much harder economically now for the middle class than in his parents' day because "everything costs more."

"I bought a little economy car to help with gas, when gas was two dollars, and now it's doubled. I never thought I would have to pay four dollars for gas."

Jeanetta Campbell, 40, is a part-time mail clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Cincinnati. She said she certainly wouldn't leave her kids in a car to chase money and she probably wouldn't do it if she was alone.

The denomination of the bills might make a difference.

"If it was hundred-dollar bills, it would be worth it," she said, laughing. "But if was just (single) dollars, no."

She's a single mother with three sons and a grandson. Her youngest son, 17, is still at home. She finds it "harder all the time to make ends meet."

Maybe the economy makes people more likely to go chase cash on a highway, she speculated, recalling her own single mother: "My mother still had to struggle, but I think the economy was better when we were growing up than it is now."
